Worried about Google? Here are 3 tools to help you save your Google data in case of emergency

There’s been a huge amount of fuss rasied about Google shutting down its free Reader service, and for good reason. Whichever way you cut it, this is a real wake up call for anyone who’s using online services to store their data. The reality is, these cloud services can shut down on a whim and there’s nothing we users can do about it.

Nextdoor – the private social network for your neighborhood

I’ve long held a belief that there are two types of online social service; those that offer genuine value over the long term, and those that are fashionable. That’s not to say you can’t have both in one, but over time we’ve seen a bunch of fashionable services such as Friendster, Digg and MySpace lose their appeal, while really valuable sites like LinkedIn continue to march ever onwards and upwards in terms of popularity and importance.

LibreOffice 4.0 is now available, so why on earth are you still using Microsoft Office? [Freeware]

I’m absolutely astounded by the number of people who still insist on spending large sums of money to buy or upgrade the Microsoft Office suite for their computer. Why are you doing this? Sure, if you’re hamstrung by a stupid I.T. department or you work for a prehistoric government body, then you have no option, but the rest of you? Really? Srsly?

My Cloud Players – this awesome music suite taps into SoundCloud, and rocks!

You know what’s outstanding about the Web? The fact that one guy can sit down in a small country somewhere and produce stuff that is mind-blowing in concept and delivery. Seriously, that’s what makes the whole Internet thing so amazing, and it’s what scares the pants off Big Co. executives when they try to plan for the future.

StoryBook – open source novel writing software will make you a millionaire…maybe [Freeware]

Some wise soul once said that everyone has one good book in them, but unfortunately they forgot to mention how we’re supposed to dig it out and get it published. Luckily there’s no shortage of folk willing to take our money to help us produce the next Shades of Potter blockbuster, ahh…but if only they could guarantee success.

PaperKit – free printable grid paper for all [Freeware]

Graphing or grid paper is one of those hidden treasures that you never realize you’re going to need, until you need it. Sure if you’re a scientific type, student or a mathematician then you’re clearly friends with the stuff, but the fact is that it can be used in lots of places where you wouldn’t obviously think of it. Think about sketching, designing, drawing a plan or a map, just about any place where you need accurate scaleable illustrations.

How to cure those annoying audio sync problems after editing smartphone video [Freeware]

If you’ve ever tried to edit and upload smartphone video to YouTube, you may have noticed that the audio and video can go out of sync. This is especially noticeable with handsets like the Samsung Galaxy range, and even iPhones we hear. Apparently the reason this happens is because the phone people use such wacky compression to maximize memory card storage space that it breaks normal video editors instantly, even the more sophisticated ones like Adobe’s Premiere Elements Pro.

Dukto – absolutely brilliant cross platform file mover is a must have tool [Freeware]

OK, answer this question. How many times have you wanted to transfer a file, photo or other piece of information like an address or map from one computer in your home to another device like a different laptop, phone or tablet? And how did you do it, with a USB stick or cable, or maybe via a CD or perhaps in desperation you even emailed it? Yep, me too, guilty as charged. Well forget your past woes, we’ve just found…

Should I Remove It – helps you decide which programs you should uninstall [Freeware]

If you’re like most people, you’ll have a ton of software installed on your computer that you’ve accumulated over the years. You see programs are rather like socks. You obtain them from various sources over the years, use them and then they lie forgotten in your bottom drawer (or hard disk folders) for ever more or until you upgrade computers. Whichever comes first.

Find That File – find files from the Internet, Usenet, .edu resources and more

Find That File is a new file search engine which doesn’t just track down web based documents and files, but also digs deep into the bowels of what they call the ‘dark web’ to try and deliver even more useful stuff. You might think that Google does this already, but it’s amazing how often other results come up on the Google page when you do a search for a specific file.

EmailTray – cool free email program controls those message overload blues [Freeware]

Riddle me this: What’s the single most useful, and at the same time most maddening, thing in the whole world? No, not hot wet-wipes, we’re talking email. It’s crucial to our lives and yet a massive burden too. Over the years we’ve tried numerous ways to improve things, including email abstinence (doesn’t work), filters, rigid routines and worse, and failed to make even a tiny dent in our message overload.

Utter! – so long Siri, this is what real smartphone voice control looks like [Freeware]

It’s a funny thing, software. Sometimes it’s not the prettiest of products which work the best, nor even the ones with the best marketing, but instead it’s a surprise coming out of left field, which manages to deliver amazing functionality with no fancy interface and zero marketing.

Buzzscale – movie ratings from social media

Why is it that whenever we have an opportunity to catch up with some leisure time, there’s never anything on cable or satellite we want to watch? Or the movies are lame or the rentals are all out or we’re just plain stuck with trash TV? One way to help find out what’s good to catch is to use the opinions of others, and that’s what this new site provides.
