SP3500 Portrait Studio Lighting Kit – shine out with those portrait skillz

This SP3500 Portrait Studio Lighting Kit looks like a fairly complete portable lighting set for budding photographers with ambition. And it seems to be selling for an attractively reasonable price, Jeremy. One might almost consider it a bargain at $399.95.  This new 3 light kit gives you plenty of power, is lightweight, portable, and simple to set up. Just like our other kits we wanted to offer a complete package with all of the necessary accessories. Thus, we have included a…

RED, The Reading Eye Dog – your mechanical scanning bookreader friend

RED, the Reading Eye Dog. Put a book in front of his eyes and he’ll read it out loud to you while displaying it on his tummy screen. Strictly conceptual at the moment, but cute and maybe useful one day?  RED, the Reading Eye Dog loves to read out loud to you! Put any printed text in front of his eyes and he will pick out the text and put it together on his tummy screen. Then not only does he…

The $99, 4 hour search engine – or why zero barriers to entry mean your web app will probably fail faster than you can blink

Groupzz. The meta music search engine. OK, so here’s the thing. There’s too much stuff out there, and it’s getting worse. More web apps, social networking, community drivel, tagging, blah… So it gets me thinking. How hard is it to make a simple web application today? Really? Step 1 – Spend half an hour searching, locate a $99.00 script on Sitepoint (there’s probably free around, but I’m in a hurry see?) Step 2 –  Spend a couple of hours creating and tweaking a simple logo…

CellKlear – camera phone lens cleaner proves that things are changing in the photo world

Cellklear. This simple lens cleaner for mobile phone cameras is just one more piece of evidence, if more were needed, that the world of photography is changing inexorably around our heads. I, for one, salute our new mobile imaging overlords and wish them long life, happiness and an endless supply of badly lit party snapshots. $8.95.  Designed specifically for camera lenses found on cellular camera phones. # The remarkable cleaning compound removes fingerprints, smudges, and grease marks with ease. # Safe for all…

27 electric car companies ready to take over the road – swish, zoom, stutter

VentureBeat has compiled a list of 27 electric car companies who are poised to change the way we travel sometime very soon. Well, as soon as they can get a few things worked out, like price, range, battery disposal, carrying capacity, speed…you get the picture. We’ve featured most of them already over the years, but it’s useful to get an overview for comparison. One of the funniest examples is the VentureOne e50, which has a rabid bunch of supporters who make Apple…

Felston Audio Synchronizer – sync the lips back to the audio on your home theater set up

Felston Audio Synchronizer. Fed up with the audio sync on your home theater being off? You know, where the lips move a fraction later than you hear the audio, like some cheap martial arts B movie? Well fret no more, dear siblings, for we have the solution. This little doobry gives you an adjustable delay of up to 680ms, so you can tune those lips into perfect harmony, no matter how strange the language or dress code. Frankly we think the manufacturers…

Gizmodo tells it straight – CES sucks, so there…

Adam Frucci’s excellent Gizmodo commentary on the recent CES show is spot on for a good number of reasons. It is, perhaps, faux gonzo journalism writ modern, but it also pinpoints a big thing that blog readers should remember – blogs are not mainstream media! It may seem obvious, despite the increasingly ‘establishment’ voice of sites like Engadget, but we are not and should not try to play by the old rules. Our voice has to be significantly different otherwise…

Public Domain Book Reprints Service – grab public domain books on paper

The Public Domain Book Reprints Service is a fab way of grabbing e-books from places like the Internet Archive to have them printed and bound into real paper books using Lulu.com. You select the e-book title from the public domain catalogues, paste the location URL into the Request field and it’s converted and transferred to Lulu.com ready for your print on demand..uh…demand. The service takes a tiny pennies commission to cover the cost of the process bandwidth. Great idea, although hopefully as it…

Voxopolis – the world’s anonymous feedback site

Voxopolis. Send anonymous feedback to anyone with an email address. The developers are clearly hoping that it’ll be used as a force for good, to improve customer service and the like, but cynics may say that it’ll just encourage the trolls. The sign up is a little cumbersome, but overall it all seems to work as advertised. This could be an easier option than setting up a temporary Hushmail account if you fancy a bit of whistleblowing action.  VOXopolis aims to…

Newspaper Phone – mainstream media starting to get clever about tech?

Hmm…missed this the first time round, but it’s actually quite interesting. Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter has just launched the world’s first ‘newspaper phone’, which is basically a Nokia 6120 with a dedicated button that takes you directly to the newspaper’s content. It’s a clever bit of convergence, and just one example of the way the future could go once digital e-readers become more common, or mobile phones start to employ in-built projection technology. Sponsored hardware, special prices for subscribers, lock-ins to make sure you read…

ClayValet – personal online shopping service delivered by…gasp… real people

ClayValet is a bit of an anomaly in this digital mechanised age. A real human shopping service. You register and post your request, they find a human to search for the product you want. They send you an email with the suggestion, complete with relevant reviews and alternative pricing. It’s got a nice feel to it, especially for gift buying, but we’re wondering where they’ll go with this as it scales? How do they make money for instance? Ah well,…

Anti-Radi Case – the low radiation cell phone holder

Anti-Radi Case. This is the mobile phone case to buy if you’re worried about your body’s exposure to cellular radiation. The Croatian developers claim to have significantly reduced the EMF radiating inwards towards the body while still allowing the phone to receive signal from the surrounding environment. Sounds rather clever to us and they certainly seem to have done some proper research on the product. They even have charts and diagrams. Golly. Unfortunately they seem to have forgotten to put…

Hyper-Sub Submersible Powerboat – now it floats, now it doesn’t…

The Hyper-Sub is a dual function boat submarine type craft. It also happens to look rather 21 century slick. They’re calling it a submersible powerboat which is pretty clever marketing. It holds 4 people, travels at 40 knots on top, has a range of 500 miles and can dive to 250 feet. Ooh look, there’s a promo video too. Price not available right now though. Heh.  Marion Hyper-Submersible Powerboat Design is proud to introduce the Hyper-Sub Submersible Powerboat, a revolutionary…

SortFix – the drag and drop search engine

SortFix. A search engine shell which uses the normal Google/Yahoo! engines, but gives you the option to select (by dragging words into boxes) more relevant or irrelevant search terms and so refine your results list. Sure it adds one more action to the search process, but for some applications – and for newcomers to search – it could help speed things up. Try it out.  Behind the scene an intelligent algorithm imitates a professional searcher – by scanning and examining the…

$2500 car inches closer to production – cheap cheerful and…well cheap

Indian car maker Tata is apparently on course to start production of the world’s cheapest car by the middle of this year. The PR machine may be in full swing, but it’s interesting to note that the management are now saying that the 70 mpg vehicle may end up costing more than $2500.00 when it arrives, dependent on commodity prices and the level of some Indian ‘government incentives’, which is a whole ball of wax on its own. The thing has already…
