Everyscape – eye level photo realistic search engine

Everyscape is an ‘eye level search engine’ that lets you travel down photo rendered streets to find businesses that you’re looking for. The interesting thing about the service is the invitation to all-comers to contribute street level images, either on an ad-hoc basis or as a paid professional. So we now have a brand new occupation in the world – street mapper. It had to come of course, what with GPS satnav, 3D search and the rest. All you need…

Kindersay English Teaching for Kids – online preschool service for get ahead mums

Kindersay is a free online English video teaching service for pre-school children. There are 500 online activities (read video snippets) available to make sure your child gets a flying start and can thereafter sneer at all the other kids who didn’t waste time on their mummy’s computer because they were stupidly outside in the fresh air playing tag and having fun and falling over in the pile of leaves outside Mrs Perkins back lawn and chasing Rover and shrieking and…….

Fuser – manage your email and social networks from a single web screen

Fuser dot com. A new service which lets you read and manage your email and social networking communications from one place. The idea is that instead of hopping around from Facebook, to MySpace to your web inbox and POP3 client, you just log into Fuser and read everything there. Cute idea and nicely presented. I can see this being really quite useful when you’re on the road and need to keep up with stuff without lots of log on hassles…

First Airbus A380 delivered to Singapore Airlines – the hotel in the sky…at a price

Just watched the live official delivery of the first Singapore Airlines A380 super plane on the BBC live video feed, and it was rather…er….corporate. Lots of suits and poor smiling hostesses standing on stage trying not to fidget. A few interesting things that came out though… They have it configured to carry 471 passengers. That’s a lot of visas, peeps. Every coach passenger gets a 27 cm video screen (that’s almost a foot wide) with a USB port and PC…

ZiiTrend – predict the future with friends, aka polls on steroids

ZiiTrend. A kind of social network for wannabe futurologists? The idea is that you get together with others and stick your finger in the air to predict what will happen tomorrow, next month, next year or in the next decade and beyond. On first glance it’s easy to write it off as a huh?, but it’s actually quite well designed, and once the numbers start to rise it might well be useful as a statistically significant – albeit screwed by web/tech bias –…

Disposable Web Page – build it, play with it, watch it disappear

Disposable Web Page dot com is a wiki disguised to look like something else. That doesn’t take away from its novelty factor though. Set up a Web site, allocate a period of time from 1 day up to 90 days duration, after which the site is vaporised. Well heck, we’ve got disposable emails, why not web sites? It’s supposed to be useful for projects, special occasion planning, personal challenges, team events etc etc. You also get a private key which you can…

BT FON – hold the phone, a major telco goes free global community WiFi?

Whoa, this is astonishing news. British Telecom, the behemoth dinosaur telco of the UK, has just announced a mega deal with FON, the free community WiFi service. The upshot of the whole shebang is that BT’s 3 million broadband customers will be encouraged – say that again? – to share WiFi and their home broadband connection between themselves wherever they are. Not only that, but BT has invested in FON. They’re calling it the world’s largest WiFi community. Unbe-chuffin’-lievable. Hold…

Gizmodo says don’t buy the iPhone – we ask WWBS?

Brian at Gizmodo has put up a post which, carefully and with reluctance, outlines the reasons why Gizmodo no longer recommends the iPhone. It’s worth reading, as is the response from my friend Jack at the Guardian. I agree with the sentiments of both pundits, although I do wonder what would have happened had Microsoft pulled a stunt like this, i.e. crippling a product in such a deliberate and malicious way? How has Apple got away with this so easily? Is…

BlogTV – is the world really ready for live video bloggers?

BlogTV. OK, so it’s logical, it makes use of current technology perfectly, it’s kinda Web 2.0 and it has all the elements that should make it car crash compulsive – live video with chat, channels for different interests and a viral interface to match the best. But for how long will the world enjoy watching the top of someone’s head while they tip-tap at a keyboard? Mmm…web cam cities for the 21st century.   About BlogTV Hello, blogTV is here! This…

Electrolux Wascator – the environmentally green dry cleaning machine

The Electrolux Wascator may look ugly, but you’ll learn to love it muchly once it starts dry cleaning your clothes using harmless carbon dioxide instead of all those nasty smelly, environment destroying chemicals. See, you’re feeling better about it already, aren’t you?  The Electrolux Group is presenting an environmentally sage dry cleaning machine. Developed by Electrolux subsidiary Wascator, the machine replaces these potentially damaging chemicals with carbon dioxide. At around 50-60 times normal atmospheric pressure, carbon dioxide liquefies[semicolon] when liquid,…

YouTube Desktop – yet another video skin

YouTube Desktop. An interesting attempt to bring some sort of user friendly front end to the incredible phenomenon that is YouTube. The eye candy makes it look pretty snazzy and the video download buttons make it a snap to grab your favourites, but at the end of the day, this is just another skin to add to the list. Still on private beta at the moment.  What makes YouTubeDesktop unique? Designing YouTubeDesktop we followed one primary idea – to bring…

The Bike Dispenser – bicycle vending machines reach Europe at last

The Bike Dispenser…er…dispenses bicycles. On demand. The service is only at pilot stage at the moment in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, but it sounds perfect for most places if the concept works out. You pay a subscription to obtain a smartcard and PIN number and use that to rent a bike at any of the vending machines you find (the plan is to site them at places like railway stations, park and ride etc). Just stick your card in the…

Loudtalks – web based instant voice chat

Loudtalks. A free VoIP walkie-talkie service. Hmm…this is an intriguing idea. Is there a market for an instant voice chat IM service? Is standard text based IM too slow for some uses? The idea is that you hit a hotkey (e.g. F7) and voice chat away to your buddy or buddies. No dial up, no wait. Just like a walkie-talkie except you’re using your computer. There’s a mobile phone version coming soon apparently, which could be very cool indeed. For some reason…
