Kwari – now you can earn cash while playing a first person shooter game

Kwari. Well it had to come. A first person shooter (FPS) game which pays real life cash for success. Judging by the site blurb it looks as though the developers have really put a lot of thought into the game and pay engine, as well as anti-cheating system, which means that this could be a very interesting experiment indeed. The game features challenges, traps (which drain your money), in-game cash prizes and pickups and something called The Pill, which is…

Megapixel myth busted at last – more doesn’t mean better…!

The folk at 6mpixel.org have come out with a pretty coherent argument against buying any compact digital camera over 6 megapixel. The reason? More megapixels don’t necessarily mean better image quality. Of course regular Ferret readers will know this already, but it bears repeating.  Quite a while ago we noticed that the image quality of digital cameras was getting worse instead of better. The reason is that today’s sensors are divided into more and therefore smaller pixels. We want to…

Better Driving Please – report bad driving and make our society a safer place to be?

Better Driving Please is a new type of vigilante social network where you try and get someone put in jail for bad driving by reporting them to the site forums. Now granted there are a huge number of dorks out there driving like idiots, but I’m just not so sure how effective this is going to be in getting them stopped. One man’s bad driving is another man’s hustling to the office, and I’ve seen plenty of bad driving by…

Japanese Virtual Makeover video technology – change appearance with the flick of a switch

The Japanese have apparently developed a new video technology that lets you experience a new virtual hair and make-up style makeover using just a camcorder and some clever software. This news clip is far too short – and Japanese sounding – to give us much detail, but the images speak for themselves. If anyone knows what the product is and a website location I’ll post the details here in an update. Tags: japanese+virtual+makeover+video, fashion, video

Summize – delivering public opinion on products for shoppers

Summize is an interesting new site which trawls the web sucking up reviews, opinions and reports on products which are then delivered as a simple set of icons and gradings. The aim is to remove the chore of hunting for product reviews and give a fast snapshot of public opinion on a product or service. The summaries are based on a simple colour coded chart icon which shows at a glance how users rated a product on sites like Amazon,…

AdReady – create and run your very own banner ad campaign quickly and easily

AdReady. The latest in a growing line of do-it-yourself advertising services. We’ve already talked about this DIY advertising genre before, as well as WipBox and Spotrunner, so this sector is obviously filling some sort of need. This is the first time I’ve seen banner ads covered though, which is an interesting twist. I’m not a great fan of this cheesy type of animated advertising in general, it’s not exactly top notch creativity at work, although to be fair some of their…

Quitdoingit – high tech way to stop smoking?

The Quitdoingit site is a Flash heavy attempt to help younger members of our society give up the dreaded weed, and as far as it goes it’s not a bad attempt to do something a little different. Of course, there are those who will find the faux scientist host more than a little annoying, thereby putting them off the valuable messages contained in the content, but that’s life really, isn’t it? Linked to the Quitline telephone service apparently. Tags: quitdoingit,…

BBC to reduce High Definition picture quality? – What price your HD television now, Sam?

BBC considers reducing DTT picture quality. So let me get this straight. The television manufacturers are pushing gung-ho with more expensive, higher resolution flat screen digital TVs. The government is cajoling us all to switch to digital with the promise of fabulous image quality and programming. But in the meantime the major broadcasters are trying to dupe the poor sap consumer by pushing out reduced resolution digital broadcasts to save money and squeeze more junk channels into the same amount of bandwidth? Yeah right, that’s…

The disappearing car door re-appearance – or how the web creates businesses out of nowhere

Now here’s interesting. Back in September we broke the story of the ‘disappearing car door’ as something of interest. It was actually a prototype being sold on eBay by an engineer from the original Lincoln test team (we think). Anyhoo blow me down with a crankshaft if it hasn’t transformed in those 3 short months from an eBay sale to a fully fledged business, complete with domain name, cheesy video and a terribly exclusive sounding sales pitch (note the English butler accent). Now that’s…

Intelliworks Energy Saver – electricity traffic cop apparently saves you money

The Intelliworks Energy Saver can apparently cut your electricity bill by up to 50% (it says here). Using some state of the art tech to ‘optimize the voltage’. Count us in as total absolute believers, because everyone knows that power surges waste electricity, all that nasty current swishing about unchecked and unloved. Does this video convince you too? $69.95.  This amazing new device uses state-of-the-art technology to act as a kind of “traffic cop” for electricity in your home or business. It…

Qik – stream videos direct from your mobile phone to the web

Qik. Fascinating new service which lets you stream video directly from your mobile phone to the Web. You download a small software applet onto your handset and from then on you’re a one-person, roaming live camcorder, and better still all streams are recorded to your own personal archive on the site. Neat concept and an inevitable result of the improvement in mobile data bandwidth. Currently very much in private beta, and only supports a small set of Nokia phones. Oh and…

Show Me How to Play. Want to learn an instrument? Without leaving your bedroom? Well here’s your chance. This new service combines a downloadable software player component, with a set of masterclass videos which you can watch and play along with to learn different parts of a song of your choice. BT gets Vision – trials free ad supported movie downloads

BT Vision Free Movie Downloads. The folks at BT Vision, the content download side of British Telecom, have started a new three month trial of free movie downloads which are advertising supported. It’s only 3 movies at the moment, so nothing uber exciting, but it’s an interesting play nonetheless. You need to install a special HIRO player and it’s Windows Media Player 9 or above only, but it’s free OK?   The free downloads with BT Vision and Intel allow…
