Treefingers – a kind of web page Twitter with Digg-like voting

Treefingers. Hmm…what to say? It’s a kind of cross between Twitter and…um…well a place where you post random thoughts about anything that comes into your head or heart and readers vote them up or down. A lot of the posts currently seem to deal with lost love, is that a sign of the times, or just an indication that web geeks should get out more? Ah me, Philosophy 101 beckons. In a funny kind of way, it’s compelling, which is…

Rent an iPhone – and save your purchase pennies for the upgraded model?

Rent an iPhone. OK, so you’re probably one of those cautious types who’s not that convinced by the hype. Or maybe you’re too attached to your present handset and don’t want to leap to something else without checking it out first. So why not rent, sayeth those enterprising folk at Erento. We’re talking £29.00 a day VAT inclusive, or £99.00 a week. You’re gonna need a SIM card, dude.   iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone that allows you to…

Electric Pig – new tech review portal snorts into life

Electric Pig is a brand spanking – Caution Wet Paint – new consumer tech review portal. Think of it as a search engine for gadget info and reviews. The site contains user reviews, hand picked expert reviews (rather than just trawling the web) and a pretty neat Auto Compare button which gives you a super fast comparison between similar products. There’s lots of Web 2.0 candy, the team comes from the very famous T3 magazine and the search function is impressively fast.  What’s ElectricPig? It’s the…

The Slow Movement gathers pace – er…

So is the Slow Movement just a fad, or something more do you think? From this angle it basically looks like a a blueprint for how to slow down and smell the coffee. [Via Metafilter]  This website supports a growing cultural shift towards slowing down. On this site we discuss how we have lost connection to most aspects of our life and to the natural world and rhythms around us, and how we can reconnect – how we can live a…

Mixx – yet another web link service joins the pack…hmm….

Mixx. A new kind of Digg, and supposedly better. I have to say that I think most community link sites have a built-in problem because they scale badly. Not because of performance, but simply because of the angry herd they seem to attract once they reach huge membership levels. The prime example is Digg, which is, to my mind, has become a pretty poor resource recently. My preferred services (in no particular order): StumbleUpon. Superb idea, done elegantly. No superfluous nonsense, just great web…

SciVee – peer reviewed science gets a web 2.0 video makeover

SciVee is a multimedia based science web journal, which is trying to deliver more value for researchers than simply submitting a dry paper to a peer reviewed publication. Simply put, it’s a place where science geeks can hang out and shoot the breeze (in a serious and earnest manner of course). OK, so it’s a little bit of a marginal application, unless you’re directly involved in science, research and the like, but it’s still a very interesting example of how net technology is likely…

Best Used By – track your perishable foodstuffs online

Best Used By. We’re kind of confused by this one. So on the one hand it’s a free, clever and rather useful online application to let you keep track of the Best By dates on your groceries, which is a neat alternative to the DaysAgo digital day counter gadget. On the other hand we’re wondering just how many people will bother to keep updating a computerised grocery list every time they do a shop? Anyhoo, for those who do keep up, the…

Tobii Eye Tracker – watching you, watching me…

The Tobii T120 Eye Tracker is a clever piece of camera/software technology embedded into a 17” TFT monitor which tracks the eye movements of a user in real time. Apparently this sort of thing is designed to watch us, as we watch things like television adverts, software programs and the like to see what we respond to. Video. I’ve got a question. If this kind of technology is so good, how is it that we continue to get rubbish software…

iPhone launch UK style – not so much a stampede, as a stammer…

Hmm…what a difference a day makes, eh? The media was all over the UK iPhone launch like a rash last Friday, talking up the anticipation and fervour for the iPhone launch in the UK. Shops Braced for iPhone Stampede, read one headline out of many such. However the reality has been a little less…er…exciting. It looks as though the UK (as with Germany) is not really that interested. My Apple fan-boy friend Tom went to his local shop to buy one…

Zilok – rent anything

Zilok. You’ve got stuff, right? Stuff that you don’t use all the time? So why not rent it out to other people who need stuff, but don’t want to buy or store it? Sound reasonable. Well that’s what the folks at Zilok are hoping. In reality I suspect that most people would rather buy or sell stuff on eBay than go through all the hassle and expense of renting. But then again what do I know?  The interface certainly works. There’s a nice…

Music Alerts – never miss another album release again…

Music Alerts. Enter your favourite artist names, hit the ‘Create Feed’ button and up pops an RSS link which updates every time a new album from the artists hit Amazon. It’s perfect this time of year for keeping track of all the tired old re-released, re-hashed Xmas fodder Greatest Hits and Best of… compilations from artists of the 80s and 90s. Oh yeah….  Why did you start Music-Alerts? I was frustrated trying to keep up with release dates for my favorite artists. One night I looked around…

Pipeline Deals – excellent sales force web application done with style

Pipeline Deals. On the face of it, just another salesforce automation tool (aka CRM). Check out the demo though, and you rapidly discover that this is one nice piece of Web 2.0 work. What that translates into is a totally customisable and very easy to use system which really does nail the sales process on the head. Big time. The data flows throughout the site like butter (edit fields inline in one section and the data appears where it’s needed…
