A computer screen that only you can see – because sometimes it’s fun to make people wonder

Ever feel like the recipient of unwanted attention as co-workers, family members, and people you don’t even know hover around your personal space, looking intently at what you’re doing on the computer? Want to mess with their heads as they stare at a field of white while you type merrily away? You can, and it’s fairly easy to do.

Lightsaber Knife – how to make your own stylish DIY wedding cake cutter

For those who are planning to get married or renew vows, here’s a chance to do it in fine style. Just imagine, what if you could bring your own little piece of Star Wars to your wedding? Your significant other might not be too happy, but at the end of the day, you and your buddies would probably geek out with screams loud enough to make a deaf person hear again.

Winscape – escape from your dreary basement to the beach in an instant with this DIY kit

Virtual window displays for wall mounted high resolution flat screen televisions is nothing new, but the latest tech has sure made them pretty cool all of a sudden. It helps also that the price of really top quality screens has plummeted over the past few years, so where it was once too expensive, it now almost makes sense to get one of these, especially if you’re stuck in a basement with no natural light.

DIY Mini Strandbeest – create your own wind walking creature and enjoy

Anyone who’s ever seen the amazing walking beach creatures – or kinetic sculptures – of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, will know how incredible they are. We actually first featured them way back in 2002. If you haven’t already seen them, take a trip to this YouTube video and spend some time being amazed. Back again? Good.

Want to plant a USB Dead Drop in the great outdoors?

We all love the idea of going on a treasure hunt. The thrill of the next clue cropping up, with the long term goal of a greater prize on the horizon. That’s probably why geocaching has become such a big ordeal. It was a way for us to combine our love of technology with the great outdoors, and come home with a sense of fulfillment.

Make Your Own Stereogram – amaze friends and family with your very own optical magic

Stereograms are probably the earliest form of 3D image, discovered by some English dude in 1838. The images are actually more about depth perception than true 3D, but when you view them properly they can really be fun. The pleasure comes from finally seeing the hidden pattern, so the thrill is in the skill, if you see what I mean.

Bleep Drum Kit

If you really want to make your own music, you should probably learn to play an instrument. If you have a general feel for the beat but aren’t too inclined to dealing with pitch, then percussion may be your forte. Buying the instrument is the next hassle, as you don’t necessarily want to drop a bunch of money on something you don’t know how to play yet.

Secret Knock Detecting Lock – Knock knock! Who’s there?

Did you ever have a club house where you had to have a secret password or knock to get in? While we can’t exactly fit into the old tree house, that doesn’t mean we can’t still keep the secret knock between friends. The only difference is that you have to be a bit sneakier in the implementation, or not everyone will play along.

The Art of Making – could this be the start of a people revolution?

The Institute of Making had its grand opening last week in central London, and we went along to get an idea of what this new venture could signal. The ‘maker movement’, as it’s called, offers a glimpse of a potential future where we don’t just passively buy and consume products, but in fact contribute in different ways to the whole product process…either by local production or hacking, repairing and recycling existing products to improve them.

North Paw Directional Anklet Kit will help you find your way home

Have you ever had the embarrassing instance of someone giving you directions which include north, east, south, or west, and have no idea which way that is? Keeping track of which way is which doesn’t seem to be relevant anymore, as we all rely on GPS systems. If you want to learn how to tell which way is which, it’s going to take a little practice.

How to Make Your Very Own MRI Music Video – The Manual!

A couple of weeks ago we broke the story of the first ever music video made in a multi-million dollar MRI machine, which was picked up by our colleagues at the BBC, TheVerge and Gizmodo and went on to grab 250,000 views in just 2 weeks. Sivu’s Better Man Than He is an awesome debut single, and it helps that I know James personally, and he’s a great guy. Another person who also seems equally awesome is Dr Marc E….
