Global Village Construction Set – keeping civilization alive via free open source blueprints

Long time readers will know how passionate we are here about the open source movement in all its forms. For example, a couple of years ago we featured 21 of the Coolest Open Source Hardware Projects in the world, which included a great open source tractor for agricultural and industrial use. Well time moves on, and it seems the movement is growing stronger by the day. That little tractor has literally become a whole ecosystem designed to provide the building…

TurnTubelist – crush your party music needs with style, Mr DJ

Parties and music go together like Tom & Jerry. Play the right selection of tracks in the right sequence during the event and you’re on your way to being the hero of your peer group. Get it wrong and you risk being shunned in corridors for the next few months. So how to guarantee you’re a hero and not a zero, without having to hire a pro DJ on your limited budget?

Pocket Bat Signal might be too small for the Dark Knight to see

Do you fancy yourself to be a maker? If DIY projects are your favorite hobby, you’re probably on the hunt for new ideas that are going to do more than sit on a shelf and collect dust. Nothing is better than making something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and if you have access to a 3D printer, you’re going to love this.

DIY Laptop Repair Wiki helps you fix your computer emergencies

Laptop computers are very cool tools, but they do suffer from more knocks and bashes than your average machine. It’s not just the drop from a high table that does the damage, but also the wear and tear from simply transporting a notebook from one location to another. Screen hinges, keyboards and device bays are particularly vulnerable to rough handling.

Tindie is a DIY hardware hacker hobbyist heaven

What’s really great about teh Internets is how easy it is to get exposure to stuff you wouldn’t usually see. Take the wide world of hardware hacking for instance. Clearly populated by incredibly intelligent beings from a distant galaxy, this community has up to now lurked in hidden basements across the world, dreaming up cool new toys and building stuff…just for a laugh. The problem is, we mere mortals have had no way to interact with these exotic creatures, until…

Danger Sign Generator lets you create warning signs to protect against lawsuits

We live in a litigious world, peeps, where every Tom, Dick and Marvin is out to sue for profit. Slip on a floor? Sue. Refused service? Sue. Insulted at a Justin Bieber concert? Sue. It’s getting out of control, so much so that people aren’t even sure their family won’t run them into a courtroom after a family dinner table argument. So what to do?

Makey Makey is an awesome invention kit for everyone

We cover a tiny fraction of the Kickstarter projects that approach us, mostly because there’s a limit to how many brush machined aluminum iPhone stands the world can handle in one month. But also because we’re kind of keen to avoid projects which seem destined for niche markets. Not so with this latest project, which we think will become a smash hit all over the world once it’s produced in volume later this year.

The grow your own transport meme starts to take off with first African bamboo bicycle factory

Bamboo is a marvellous material, stronger than steel, flexible, durable and very ecologically sustainable. Some varieties can grow over a metre a day! In the Philippines they even make houses of it, and it’s used as scaffolding across the whole of the Far East. The really weird thing is it’s a grass, imagine having to mow it every Sunday? The latest big idea for this wonder plant is to use it for mass transportation, most specifically bicycles.

GlobaLeaks lets anyone anywhere create their own free WikiLeaks type whistleblower site

Of all the recent online phenomena, probably the one with the biggest global impact has been Wikileaks, the anonymous whistleblowing site designed to let people submit information to the public gaze which might otherwise be kept secret. Whether you agree or not with the type of content they have released, it’s impossible to argue against the impact this kind of informational transparency has had on the political and commercial world.

This ECO-iP4 DIY Paper iPhone Dock can be made from any stiff paper or cardboard material and can be built in around 15 minutes if you’ve got a nice sharp pair of scissors and a printer handy. The Logitech Mouse Double Click Problem and How To Fix It!

We’ve long had a love hate relationship with Logitech mice. On the one hand they’re ergonomically designed and feature the wonderfully useful hyperscroll wheel for sweeping through documents and web pages, but on the other they suffer from a fundamental fault after a few years of use, when the mouse buttons start to fail (note that other mice also seem to suffer from the problem, although we’re not sure whether that’s because they’re OEM models made by the Logitech factory). Despite our rant…

Build your own iPhone Boombox

We all like to listen to music on the go. Whether it be in the car, on a stroll in a woods, or having a picnic at the park, it’s nice to have some background music to accompany your day. Your iPhone likely carries a good hunk of your music, but it’s difficult to get much sound out of such a tiny device. Instead of paying a hefty sum of money on purchasing speakers, why not make some of your…
