RaimaRadio – listen and record Internet radio stations for free

RaimaRadio is a new freeware Internet radio player and recorder. It’s got a nice clear interface which is based around the traditional Windows look as opposed to flash designer styling. This makes it super easy to use and there’s a bunch of really nice features included like automatic album art downloading and multiple stream playing (so you can swap stations instantly on a whim). There’s a goodly selection of stations on offer, although a fair few appeared to be ‘gone…

Defraggler – free defrag program with the personal touch

Defraggler is a free defragmentation tool for optimising the performance of your hard disk. It does this by re-arranging file fragments so they’re all contiguous where possible, which translates into faster seek and save times. The commercial King of the Hill is Diskeeper, but it costs $29.95, which makes this puppy a bit of a bargain. Defraggler is slower than Diskeeper, but that’s probably because it analyses each file fragment to give you the option to optimise parts of your disk rather than the whole thing….

Ad Notifier – free Craigslist advert monitor

Ad Notifier is a cool little freeware package which monitors Craigslist for adverts which meet your search criteria. Looking for a bargain, flat share or just browsing the personals? Well take the drudge out of the task by letting your PC take the strain while you sit back and pick your toenails. Or something. It’s small, easy to use and can monitor an endless list of classifieds. I’ve started using it to look for all those slightly dodgy unlocked iPhone bargains! [Update:…

Vedivi – free personal VPN lets you access your home PC on the move

Wallcooler is a free personal VPN (Virtual Private Network). Install the program on both computers and you’ll be able to access your home computer from your laptop whilst on the road. The interesting thing is that you apparently don’t need to fiddle about with firewalls or port forwarding in order to get things working, which is a bonus over other free VPNs. You will however need an account with their server, which may be something you may want to think about…

Zonealarm Forcefield – cross browser security for your computer

The developers at Checkpoint have got together with those at Zonealarm and created a new free security program called Zonealarm Forcefield. The product shields your PC from unwanted malware attacks, gives you a private browser function which removes all traces of your web movements and provides a ‘virtualization engine’ to prevent anything entering onto your system without your knowledge or approval (a bit like Sandboxie). I downloaded and installed it to test, but pretty quickly removed it when I realised that it…

Digital Camera Enhancer – free digital camera image improver

Digital Camera Enhancer. A nice free utility to help improve the quality of your digital photographs. Focused only on skin tone, noise and light balance, but worth having in your tool chest nonetheless.  Free DCE does the hard job of noise reducing and automatic balance control for you. And it is free! The program works best if you have bad light condition (indoor, shadows etc..) and your image is somehow off. So if some of your images are already fine,…

Internet Video Converter – free flexible French footage fixer

Internet Video Converter. Free video converter which at first glance looks like a straight rival to Super. However look a little closer and you’ll notice some interesting and valuable differences. First the interface is significantly better than Super. Second it offers a few more easy to use features – e.g. one click video download from a huge selection of video sites (although the version I tested has a few glitches which hopefully will be fixed with the new version). It also…

MobileTCP – auto switching mail servers when you laptop roam

MobileTCP is one of those really simple fire and forget freeware utilities that could easily turn out to be indispensable. What does it do? Well if you’re a Windows laptop user who moves around with your machine a lot (e.g. from home to work to client etc), then you’ll know what a hassle it is to keep changing SMTP server settings to send email from your new network location. The Thunderbird email client makes it easier, but it’s still a drag to…

Nexus Radio is s ‘100% free’, iPhone and iPod compatible streaming radio service which offers one click recording of any of the over 6000 stations they stream. So we’re talking advertising funded Tivo for Internet radio here, which is somewhat interesting. The audio comes in 5.1 Surround Sound flavour, and there’s a useful little audio editor included so you can trim and fix recorded tracks. You need to download the free player, but it’s actually quite a nice application, with a simple interface and…

Free iPhone Unlock released – saucy hack puts Apple in a stew…

Well it took a few months, but finally you can unlock your iPhone for free using a free software kit developed by some rather clever hackers from across the world. And here’s some instructions for you. You may also need the iBrickr utility. Couch potatoes should probably lean back, grab a pack of Pringles and wait for a full blown Windows/Mac installer, and if you’re in Europe wait for an iPhone to arrive too. Probably. This has been a public service…
