Convert your Windows XP to Windows Vista – dangerous liaisons

Feeling brave and yet too cheap to splash out more money to Microsoft? Then download the free Vista Transformation Pack and transform your boring old Windows XP interface into a shiny new Windows Vista look-alike. Why brave? Because this skinning stuff has a tendency to dig itself deep into the guts of your PC, which can make it tricky to uninstall if it doesn’t work properly. In other words, don’t do this unless you’re prepared to re-format your machine and start again…

Devicescape – quick and easy auto-connect to hotspots

Devicescape. Sign up, download the software and it will automatically sign you in to your WiFi service of choice as you roam. The program runs on Windows PCs, Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphones and a couple of other WiFi devices, but it will need many more VoIP and WiFi enabled devices on the list to make this really useful. One to watch though, because anything that makes it easier to connect to hotspots gets a thumbs up from us. No more…

SlimTimer – log your task timings super easily

SlimTimer. Rather slick browser app lets you log and report on the time you spend on your tasks. Think of it as a super easy timesheet application. Embed it into your browser and every time you start a new task you can start a new clock and keep adding to it each time you do a bit more of the task. Use it with Bubbles and you can minimize the timer to the task bar which is even cooler. Nice.   * Making time tracking…

Songbird and Democracy – Open Source starts to flower

If anyone needs proof that the Open Source movement is becoming a seriously important factor in the world of software, they only have to look as far as the two newest arrivals on the scene. Songbird and Democracy are two media players – music and video respectively – which have the potential to blow the bloated, DRM enslaved commercial alternatives out of the water. Make no mistake, this stuff is not just good because it’s free, it’s good because it’s well coded,…

Sample Swap – free audio samples for download

Sample Swap. Free ‘professional quality’ audio samples for downloading. Over 7000 samples available and there’s a nice Flash audition feature too.  Are these sounds royalty-free? They’ve gone and upgraded the Kish Kish Lie Detector for Skype. It’s now got a fancy needle and a dial just like a proper lie detector. Golly.
