Firepuddle. BitTorrent P2P downloading for Firefox. Very Alpha and only for Firefox 1.5 beta. Caveat!  This a HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL release which may crash and no doubt contains a few bugs. The purpose of this release is to demonstrate the progress of this project. It should not be used for any important downloads! If you are unsure, please wait till the beta releases.

Google Desktop Beta.

Google Desktop Beta. Just installed this. Hate to sound like Google fan-boy, but it’s good. Integration – 9/10 (disappears into the desktop interface nicely) Usefulness – 7/10 (still trying to work out if it’s *that* useful) Speed – 7/10 (indexing kind of sluggish, no impact on day to day working though) Compatibility – 6/1 (breaks some stuff – see below – but seems OK) Community – 8/10 (plug-ins good) Comments: Breaks TruImage, needs more upfront explanation of the various desktop panel options, but the integrated desktop and web…

Google WiFi Secure Access.

Google Secure Access. Not clear whether this works outside of San Francisco, but Google’s just introduced a secure WiFi service. Download the program, fire it up and it will automagically encrypt your data to and fro their servers. Very interesting Lucy, especially since it’s the fruit of a Google engineer’s spare time.   Why did Google develop Google Secure Access? One of our engineers recognized that secure WiFi was virtually non-existent at most locations. As a result, he used his…

Orb. Freeware lets you stream your music, movies, video and live or recorded TV from your home computer to any laptop, PDA, mobile phone or remote PC. You can even set it up to stream navigation maps and info. Sounds uber cool, don’t it?  When you connect from a mobile device or remote PC, Orb detects your connection speed and the upstream bandwidth available from your home PC. Orb streams content at the highest quality available to you, providing the…

Phone sharing.

Intercom Pages. Er…I’m kinda confused about this one. They’re billing it as ‘Free Call Telephone Sharing’, which sounds kind of similar to the phone call timeshare concept from the original Free World Dialup (which I see has now gone all commercial). Download the free software on 30th September and tell us all about it, eh?  XP user can now call anywhere to anywhere planet wide for the cost of a local call or make free calls forever. Intercom Pages is offering…

Keylogger detector.

KL-Detector is a free utility which can detect keylogging activity on your computer. If you’re paranoid, download. Note – an interesting application given on the site is monitoring a flash drive used for remote access to a VPN on 3rd party computers. Hmm….  It works by scanning your local hard disk for any log file created during the monitoring process. Most keyloggers will eventually save the recorded data into a location in the hard disk. KL-Detector will inform you of such log…

Get Foxie.

Foxie. Turn your Internet Explorer browser into a Firefox clone. What’s utterly delicious about this little doozie, is not just the fact that it’s so clearly an attempt to put a mink coat on a pig and call it Marilyn Monroe, but that it completely fails to understand the really massive benefit of Firefox – i.e. the absolutely humongous number of add-on tools and utilities that are so much more than a bit of tabbed browsing and pop up blocking. Pfaff. Still, if you’re still wedded to the pile of…

Local host.

LocalHost. Very interesting Java based Open Source online file sharing application which combines a kind of wiki-like group access and editing facilty with the BitTorrent engine. What’s really funky is that the more popular a file or folder is, the more accessible it is. Still under heavy development by the looks of it (needs a nicer UI) so don’t cuss about the access speeds. Neat and definitely worth a download. [Thanks Tom]  You can change any folder (including the root…

AutoHotkey. Neat little free Open Source program which lets you automate just about anything on your PC. Keystrokes, mouse clicks, hotkey setup. What’s uber cool is the fact that you can convert any script to an exe file and run it on machines which don’t have the program installed. Nice and definitely worth a download.   AutoHotkey is a free, open-source utility for Windows. With it, you can: Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a…

Art Rage.

ArtRage. Nice little freeware paint program. Free. Yes free. PC or Mac.  ArtRage is a painting package designed to provide a realistic and fun simulation of using paint on a canvas, along with pens, pencils, crayons, and other tools. ArtRage is available for both Windows and Mac OS X. It can be used with a mouse, but works better if you have a graphics tablet, or even better on a Tablet PC where ArtRage takes advantage of the unique interaction…
