American Express now lets you exchange reward points for FarmVille credit

I’m starting to think that I’m the last person to use FaceBook without ever playing FarmVille. It’s probably for the best, as it seems to be one of the most addicting games known to man. A while back they introduced FarmVille credit, which allowed you to exchange real money for virtual items in the game. That seemed crazy enough, but now things have gone even further. American Express will now allow you to trade in reward points for FarmVille credit….

TicTacDo – a collaborative to-do checklist service on steroids

TicTacDo is an interesting new service which aims to beef up the humble To-Do list and make it much more collaborative and easy to use. For starters you just enter in the project you want, and the system will try and find a ready made to-do checklist to use as a template. It’s a neat idea and could save a lot of time. The list of ready made lists ranges from the banal such as teaching your kid how to…

AudioDraft – crowdsource your next music need

AudioDraft is a new crowdsourced music service, which helps musicians hook up with those who need custom music tracks. Anyone can post a request (or contest) for some music, which musicians can bid for. The buyer sets the license terms (exclusivity and duration) and the prize fee, and then gets to select and rate the best entries. Once a winner is chosen, the fee is paid to the lucky musician and the buyer gets their music to use as specified. It’s a clever adaptation of the current…

zButterfly – gorgeous looking freeware for downloading movies

zButterfly is a new freeware program designed to let your grandma download movies for free. Really now, this is getting more than silly. Every time the poor old media industry knocks off one product, up pops another even more sophisticated and easy to use. This is like a war of attrition which only the mutant virus wins. Anyhoo, the Java based program comes with a number of different interface options, ranging from the default granny friendly beginner mode, to a…

Compassion Pit – chat anonymously with a stranger and unburden your troubles

Compassion Pit is a nice idea. A free anonymous chat room which lets people ‘connect with someone who will listen’. Kind of an online Samaritans I guess. The service is open to both listeners and talkers, and while we’re not sure how the service moderates the listeners to ensure quality, it’s still a nice idea. What a shame, though, that our Western society has become so fragmented that we need things like this, eh?  You want to share your feelings, but you can’t…

Hooeey Webprint – freeware lets you automatically save your web browsing trail as you go

The quirkily named Hooeey Webprint is a new freeware software and online service combo which automatically captures your web surfing history as you go. Think of it as a web bookmarking system on steroids. But wait, I hear you cry, you can already do that with default bookmarking or with tools such as Scrapbook or Evernote. Ah yes, dear reader, but this is an automatic service. No button pushing or logging in needed. Just fire up your browser with the Adobe Air…

Mielophone – cool new open source music sharing program covers it all

Mielophone is a new freeware music sharing program which really does cover it all. The open source software (the source code is here) is based on the Adobe Air platform, and lets you stream and download tracks, watch videos, and listen to a radio playlist of artists similar to your search criteria. The Russian developers are claiming it to be a ‘Napster like application’, and it does have a very complete feature list.  However it isn’t as effective as the late Mulve.com software at…

I really like this list of 12 YouTube Hacks, as it defines just how popular this video site has become for all of us, both young and old. I particularly like TubeChop (which lets you splice YouTube videos to highlight a specific section) and the YouTube Labs. I am currently trying out the super lean Feather version of YouTube from the labs, and it’s fun.  Whether you want to view a video with a far-away friend, compare two clips, or find…

OpenHatch – the free portal for open source projects

OpenHatch is a neat online portal which aims to bring together open source projects and potential contributors. It’s a great resource for those who would like to get involved but don’t know where to start looking. It’s all totally free, and anyone can add their project to the database in order to find contributors, which is cool.  OpenHatch was founded in May 2009 by three alumni of the free culture and free software movements. The company was part of startup…

Likify is a very cool bit of tech which lets anyone solicit Facebook Likes for their product or service using QR barcodes printed on real stuff. So for instance you can print out a barcode for your tea shop, stick it on your menu and have people scan it with their smartphones and give you a thumbs up if they enjoy your Earl Gray. Or whatever. This combination of off and online is just delicious, and we’re giving it a…

Phile – cool new way for groups to chat about stuff they love

Phile is a new beta online application which brings together a bunch of cool features to let groups of people chat and share their passions via the web. The key feature is the ease of set up and administration and certainly the devs have done a superb job of making it easy to set up the database and populate the site with starter content. The whole UI is clean, uncluttered and easy to navigate and there’s a great starter wizard to help…

FrostWire for Android – the first mobile P2P file sharing freeware

FrostWire for Android is the world’s first P2P file sharing network program for a mobile phone. It’s WiFi only so no 3G transfers allowed, and it comes with all the chat and sharing features you’d expect. The freeware is based on a new file sharing protocol called MetaFrost which is optimised for mobile phones, which means your choice of general public content will be less, but your downloading experience should be better. I especially like the dev’s commitment to open source the code once it’s…
