Guvera – Free music revolution

Guvera is a new way of acquiring music for free, legitimately. It’s an advertisement-driven system but with a big twist, you have to subscribe to the ad channels to gain credits. It sounds a bit dinky but it does work. Advertisers create “channels” promoting TV shows, drinks, movies or products and by subscribing to the channel you get credits with which to purchase music. The benefit being, you only see brands and products that you want to look at but…

Facebook fail – or how to enjoy some quality time with Barbara Streisand

Oh dear, Facebook at it again…this time going after someone who has created a Greasemonkey script which modifies your browser to remove spam ads, quizzes, silly applications etc from your home page. This F**B**Purity (Facebook sued the dev into changing the name) script works on the browser alone, so it really has nothing to do with Facebook at all, but still their legal eagles have gone to town.   Of course, this being the Internets, the Streisand effect has kicked in, and so…

FooFind – the mega media file finder

FooFind is a new P2P search engine that is geared towards finding magnet links from the major file sharing sources. This makes it a) problematical to use unless you are familiar with magnet links and b) problematical to police since magnet links have no home. You may assume that this is the next step in the digital content war, so grab some popcorn, kick back and enjoy the show.  foofind is a universal search engine. In foofind we work creating software…

Groupola – group buying kicks off at last…slowly

Groupola is a new service which promises to deliver lower prices through collective bargaining. The site emails daily offers to subscribers, with discounts of around 50% and more at times, which go live when enough people sign up to accept them. It’s not a new idea, Salescoop and CrowdSprout were early stillborn efforts in the genre, but as far as we know Groupola is the first which has actually opened its doors to the public.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1JnPHbu75M Will this one work? Who knows,…

Kachingle – micropayment crowdfunding for digital stuff

Kachingle is a new micropayment system that relies on lots of people allocating small amounts of money to an acount which automatically disburses pennies according to the places you visit often. It actually sounds as if it could work, but of course we’ll only know when huge numbers of people are happily using it. The interesting thing is that everyone is encouraged to keep an account going with some money in it, both readers and publishers. This suggests that you…

Newspaper Club – make your own printed newspaper and craft an empire…buwahahaha

Newspaper Club is one of those crazy ideas which is so out there that it might just work. A bunch of enterprising folk have located some spare printing capacity on a London newspaper printing press, and are renting it out to anyone to create their own printed tabloids. You can produce a maximum of 12 pages per edition, complete with images and colour. You get a choice of tools, ranging from an in-house editor to a file upload tool which…

The Awesome Highlighter is a quick and easy website annotator which lets you add coloured highlights and notes to any site on the Net. Just enter in the URL, and add your annotations via the simple menu. It’s actually much more than just a highlighter. You can also set up an account to store your notes and highlights, and also search via tags, date and domains and you can even highlight things like videos and images. The latter takes it into a…

Fiverr – awesome service advertises what people will do for $5

I love the idea of Fiverr. What is it? An online community where people offer their services for $5.00. I’ll design a business card for you for $5 I’ll write and record a song for you for $5 I’ll review your website for $5 etc… …you get the picture. Is it open to abuse? You bet. Can it be wacky crazy? Oh yes. Is it a clever application of Craigslist social logic? – most definitely. I’m currently looking for someone…

Suicide Machine to go open source – victory for personal data privacy over Facebook bullying

Facebook may have managed to shut down the Suicide Machine with an army of nasty lawyers, but the good news is the fact that it’s going open source. The head of the service – which gives you an automated way to delete yourself from social networks – Gordan Savicic is promising to release a downloadable version of the code under open source, so anyone can use it to delete their Facebook or other profile. A bit of a victory for…

InBox2 – cool hybrid freeware and online service gives you back control of your email

There’s no doubt that people are feeling overwhelmed by the deluge of digital communication hitting their eyes and inboxes, but I do wonder whether the solution is not so much in products like this Inbox2 software and online service hybrid, which simply act as super efficient collection agencies, or more with semi-intelligent products like the Raindrop product from Mozilla, which will learn how to make choices for you in terms of prioritizing important communications from lesser ones.  Once you sign up to…

Rapportive – cool browser plugin adds social networking data to Gmail

Rapportive is a very cool web browser plugin which adds a sidebar full of social networking info to Gmail. The clever bit is it only kicks in when you access a message, at which point it goes off to search for social network information relating to the sender. You get immediate access to their Twitter feed embedded in the sidebar, and direct access to their Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace pages if available. Wowee, instant stalking… There’s also space to add…

Google buys Picnik – Is a web based Picasa in the works

Google has announced that it has bought Picnik, one of the first cloud-based photo editing websites. They haven’t announced any changes yet, just integration and the maintaining of current services but an online version of Picasa built into the web albums would be very cool. Provided you like Google storing and editing your photos for you. More than ever before, people are sharing and storing their photos online. But until recently, you had to edit your photos using client software…
