Behold, the personal web – aka Personal Blocklist – arrives!

Well this could *really* put the cat among the pigeons. A few days ago Google released an extension called Personal Blocklist for its Chrome web browser that lets you set up a personal list of websites to block from any search results you get on Google. The extension is designed to remove those annoying sites called ‘content farms‘ which do nothing but promote search engine optimised content written to a formula in order to earn money from Adsense clicks. You’ll have come across…

UJam – your very own free online backing band, without the tantrums

UJam is a very cool online music making application which provides a bunch of tools to help you create music. Actually what makes it stand out from the rest of the genre like MusicShake is the fact that it focuses on vocalists, rather than giving you a platform for producing sequenced sample tunes. You can upload melodies or use any of the default ones and layer your own vocals over the top using the integrated player/recorder. It’s a bunch of fun,…

Internet Buttons – the ultimate web interface for your Mom

Internet Buttons is a free roll your own web home page which you can use to create simple navigation themes to your favourite sites and services. It’s clearly designed for Internet challenged folk and those who have to care for them, and in that respect it does a Darn Fine Job! The whole interface is laughably simple to use, just follow the wizard which covers your likes and dislikes or go freestyle and create your own buttons, save them with some…

Psykopaint – free online photo conversion service for budding artists

Psykopaint is a free to use online application which lets you artistically tweak and convert your digital photographs into works of art. Of course it kind of helps if you’re half an artist to begin with, because if you’re not, the result is likely to be a big brown splodge, trust us we’ve been there. The app comes with a bunch of brushes, presets and tools like zoom, but in the end it’s your creativity that’s going to make this…

Thsrs – The Twitter thesaurus

Doesnt it bother you when you realize that youve used that big word you love one too many times? The main problem being that you cant think of something comparable to replace your beloved fallback. This can sometimes make social networking services such as Twitter really frustrating, as you have limited space to post. Now there is a service called Thsrs that will help you to fit that 144-character message into the 140-character slot allotment. This is an online thesaurus…

Listening Room – listen to music together in your private online room

Listening Room is a truly cool idea. Basically an online record booth where you can listen to music together with your friends. Think chat room, but for audio tracks. Anyone in the room can add a track to be played and everyone can hear it. It’s a wild idea and done beautifully (albeit minimally). Clearly a work in progress as it does have a slight tendency to shut off mid-track. But still absolutely worth a bookmark!  Listening Room is a…

Yahoo to let you login to their services with a Google or Facebook account

Here is an interesting bit of news. It would seem that Yahoo will soon no longer require a Yahoo account in order for you to use their services. You can instead use either a Google or Facebook login via OpenID if you want to use Flickr, or any of the company’s other offerings. My real question for this (as it hasn’t gone live just yet, though it should later today) is whether or not I’ll be able to use Yahoo…

Facebook disables access to address and phone number by 3rd party applications

That was pretty fast. Yesterday we posted about some changes recently made to Facebook. Specifically, the ability for 3rd party applications to access your address and phone number. We weren’t the only ones that saw the negative effects of this, and it would seem that Facebook was listening. The company posted on their Developer Blog that they are temporarily disabling this feature. That does mean that it will be re-enabled at some point, but with some changes. What these will…

Facebook now allows 3rd party apps to access your address and phone number

Facebook is a great tool for networking with your friends. However, if you have private information listed on the site, there’s always the worry that such data will fall into the hands of people that you don’t want it to. Well now the site has made it easier for 3rd party applications to access both your address and phone number. When you try to use a 3rd party app, you get a dialogue box that asks if you want to…

Tiny Letter – cool free instant email newsletter service

TinyLetter is a cool new free online service which lets you set up your very own email newsletter in about a minute and a half. The interface is scrumptiously utilitarian, with no fluff in sight. Just sign up, and start creating. Oh you’ll need to add some subscribers of course, but friends and family are a good start, eh? Your design options are limited, there’s no glam stuff like analytics included (yet, but we’re sure a premium fee based version will…

Insignia Infocast 8 Inch Media Display – Chumby powered desktop media appliance

This Insignia Infocast 8 Inch Media Display is a Chumby O/S powered web computer which delivers Internet radio, video and music playback, digital photo frame functionality and various fun type applications for download. The Chumby connection means that theoretically it’s open source hackable, not sure how that plays out in real life though. It features an SVGA touchscreen, 800Mhz processor, 2GB of RAM, WiFi, USB ports, speakers and a natty little desk stand. Despite all this we can’t help thinking that it…

Gift A Stranger – spread a little happiness in the world

Gift a Stranger is a cute little online app powered by Google Maps, which lets you send a gift to a random stranger anywhere in the world. The gift can be anything, the recipient can be anywhere (as long as they have an address) and the delivery is by postal mail.   All you have to do is specify the gift you’re willing to send, upload a picture of it, and click Find Stranger. The service then offers you a…

Buddycloud – Foursquare meets Google Groups

Buddycloud is an open source alternative to Foursquare which offers location based social networking as well as more traditional interests based groups. It’s available for the Nokia platform and iPhone (almost) with alpha versions for Android available too if you hunt around. It’s interesting because it’s open, which is important if the Net is going to avoid being swallowed up by a small group of huge corporate services which own and control data and access. The other crucial bonus for…
