alaTest – mega product review portal does nice work

alaTest is an international product comparison portal which offers up a great mix of product reviews from experts and users, as well as price alternatives and a user comments panel. We first stumbled across this service a while back, but didn’t blog it because the content wasn’t there, but my how it’s come on. It now features over a million product reviews culled from more than 700 international sources, which makes it an excellent resource for shoppers in a hurry….

Get It Next! – eBay search done properly

Get It Next! A very cool and very free eBay search interface that makes searching on eBay actually pleasant. Yes shocking isn’t it? Lots of neat features like saved searches, category, bargain and Buy it Now searches and the results are Web 2.0 clear, clean and a snap to use.  You know there’s a problem, don’t you, when a default interface is so bad that people develop alternatives as  business idea? Definitely worth using if you’re an eBay’er, but it is beta –…

Zilok – rent anything

Zilok. You’ve got stuff, right? Stuff that you don’t use all the time? So why not rent it out to other people who need stuff, but don’t want to buy or store it? Sound reasonable. Well that’s what the folks at Zilok are hoping. In reality I suspect that most people would rather buy or sell stuff on eBay than go through all the hassle and expense of renting. But then again what do I know?  The interface certainly works. There’s a nice…

FaveBot – stop searching, start discovering

FaveBot is a persistent search engine. Enter in your search terms, select which media you wish to search (e.g. blogs, images, news etc) and it will return a constantly updating list of references to your phrase or word. It’s cool for a couple of reasons. First, it works. I’ve used it and it really does pick up some interesting results. For example I entered in the words ‘William Blake’, and blow me down if it didn’t find my mate’s upcoming production of William Blake’s…

Splashup – online photo editing is like an onion, donkey

Splashup. Is this the first online image editing service with layers? Quite possibly. Which makes it a rather ambitious alternative to mainstream software programs like Photoshop. It’s a little slow in use, fast broadband is essential, and the feature set is nowhere as complete as the majors, but hey, levels?  Splashup, formerly Fauxto, is a powerful editing tool and photo manager. With all the features professionals use and novices want, it’s easy to use, works in real-time and allows you to…

Pipeline Deals – excellent sales force web application done with style

Pipeline Deals. On the face of it, just another salesforce automation tool (aka CRM). Check out the demo though, and you rapidly discover that this is one nice piece of Web 2.0 work. What that translates into is a totally customisable and very easy to use system which really does nail the sales process on the head. Big time. The data flows throughout the site like butter (edit fields inline in one section and the data appears where it’s needed…

TipaTipa – get paid for helping others find a good deal

TipaTipa is a cool new discount finder community service with a twist. Instead of just supplying product reviews as with places like Ciao, DooYoo or Epinions, in this model the community works for each other for cash. You know where there’s a good bargain TV to be found? Tell someone who’s looking and they will probably give you a small payment as a thank you. It combines the wisdom of the crowds with the mercenary-ness of the urban jungle to…

Yourstreet – your online community notice board

Yourstreet comes with a deliciously elegant interface and a small but perfectly formed set of features focussed around 3rd party news, chat and a nice Google map mashup, all designed to encourage your local community to connect up online. Of course sites like this need a goodly amount of user interest before they become genuinely useful, but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t serve as a great local community notice board once enough people start using it in earnest. And it’s obvious…

Musicshake – more music fun than a tub full of honey with sugar sprinkles

MusicShake is being marketed as ‘the easiest way to make music in the world’  and they’ve got a point. What they should also say is that it’s as addictive as…well the most addictive thing on your list of addictive things. There’s lots of music making sites and programs out there, and on the face of it this one is no different. You create tunes by arranging blocks of instrument and vocal samples on a timeline. So far so normal. What…

Boo.com is back – as a Web Too company? Oh how we laugh….

Boo.com is back!! Yes it’s back, honestly, and we nearly fell of our chair laughing to see the new incarnation all shiny bright as a full on, Web 2.0, glitzy social networking, travel service. Priceless stuff, this. You couldn’t pay for a better show. Wow! Next week, The Spot returns as a Wiki. Hahahaha!  In launching boo.com we’ve tried to create an experience taking what was once a tedious process involving multiple sites and deliver it under a single offering….

Fuser – manage your email and social networks from a single web screen

Fuser dot com. A new service which lets you read and manage your email and social networking communications from one place. The idea is that instead of hopping around from Facebook, to MySpace to your web inbox and POP3 client, you just log into Fuser and read everything there. Cute idea and nicely presented. I can see this being really quite useful when you’re on the road and need to keep up with stuff without lots of log on hassles…

ZiiTrend – predict the future with friends, aka polls on steroids

ZiiTrend. A kind of social network for wannabe futurologists? The idea is that you get together with others and stick your finger in the air to predict what will happen tomorrow, next month, next year or in the next decade and beyond. On first glance it’s easy to write it off as a huh?, but it’s actually quite well designed, and once the numbers start to rise it might well be useful as a statistically significant – albeit screwed by web/tech bias –…

Disposable Web Page – build it, play with it, watch it disappear

Disposable Web Page dot com is a wiki disguised to look like something else. That doesn’t take away from its novelty factor though. Set up a Web site, allocate a period of time from 1 day up to 90 days duration, after which the site is vaporised. Well heck, we’ve got disposable emails, why not web sites? It’s supposed to be useful for projects, special occasion planning, personal challenges, team events etc etc. You also get a private key which you can…

Fluther – ask a question, get an answer

Fluther is a free ‘question answer’ service. What makes it different is the straight up, no nonsense interface and the fact that it features instant chat to discuss answers. Whether these answers are any use is another matter entirely of course, which means that it has some way to go before it beats the venerable and much loved Ask Metafilter.   Imagine having five Uncle Franks to answer your car questions, eight Aunt Marthas to ask about astronomy and six…
