TableTop Aquaponics – grow your own food the healthy sustainable way

In case you hadn’t heard, food is getting more expensive, mostly due to rising harvesting, shipping, and processing costs. One answer to the problem has been to start looking at alternative, more local and efficient ways to produce food for communities wherever they are, and Aquaponics looks like a solid solution. The system marries aquaculture (aka fish farming) with hydroponics, to deliver fresh home grown vegetables along with fish supplies when needed.

Southwest Airlines upcycles its used leather seats

Upcycling – turning used products that would have ended up in the landfill into new products – is becoming more mainstream. Now it’s Southwest Airlines that’s jumped onboard. It’s new LUV Seat: Repurpose with Purpose sustainability program will turn 43 acres of used leather seat coverings into useful new products. After going more eco-friendly by replacing many of its fleet’s interior leather products with more lightweight materials- which reduced each plane’s weight by 600 pounds – the airline was stuck…

EcoDrain – stop wasting hot shower water, recycle it to save money and save the planet

We all know that we waste a lot of energy every day. Even while doing the simplest of things like taking a hot shower, we can end up sending a bunch of valuable energy down the drain in the form of still heated waste water. But thankfully there’s now a very cool gadget which will make our shower time more efficient and save money at the same time.

A Wind Turbine designed for the 21st century

When you think of a wind turbine, the massively tall device with huge long rotating blades comes to mind. But the Netherlands-based tech firm The Archimedes has created an unusual styled turbine based around the idea of the nautilus shell. The Liam F1 Urban Wind Turbine is said to have an energy yield that is “80 percent of the maximum that is theoretically feasible.” Conventional turbines produce an average of 20 to 25 percent energy yield, so this claim, if…

Green Power E-Bike – two seater, 30mph, 50 mile range electric scooter

Let’s face it, there’s no reason why electric scooters shouldn’t be all shapes and sizes. After all they’re just two wheels and a seat or two. We may be accustomed to more conventional styling, but we’re guessing that as the technology improves and motors get smaller, we’ll start seeing a lot of interesting new formats.

Sada Bike – hubless, elegant and folds to the size of an umbrella

Every since the dawn of the age of the wheel, people have been trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to improve upon the basic design. Similarly with derivatives such as the bicycle. So we’re not surprised to find that an enterprising Italian engineering student has also decided to have a go. But with typical Latin flair.

Ever wished there was a bank which was actually driven by more humanitarian goals than merely making more profit? Yes there are credit unions, cooperative and community banks, but they almost all still revolve around the idea of interest payments on loans and savings.
