Plastic Eating Bacteria – microorganisms in the fight against pollution

Plastic waste is a huge problem because we rely on the material for many, many things. Not just grocery bags and packaging either. Medical equipment, tech devices, inexpensive textiles, etc. The list is really endless. One day we may be able to dispose of plastic the same way we do food waste, with bacteria. Plastic eating bacteria isn’t here yet but it’s looking better and better for our future.

What To Do With Oil Tankers – new plans seek to turn them into power generators

So when we quit using fossil fuels, what’s going to happen to oil tankers? Video games and movies mostly stick with the theory that we’ll hollow them out and use them as post-apocalyptic housing. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Instead, they may have a future as giant, floating power farms that generate energy from waves.

Modern Meadow – this company is making fabric from micro organisms

Textiles, specifically those made from animals or animal fibers in this case have a heavy toll on the environment. Cultivating these materials takes up a good deal of space and leads to a lot of manufacturing waste. Although the practice can be done with less waste on small scales, that’s not industry standard. Modern Meadow is the company that is taking on the textile industry by creating animal free products.

Lightyear One – the solar powered electric car

Electric cars are considered by many to be one of the key components in battling climate change. Getting them on the road, getting emission causing cars off the road, can only help. One of the biggest issues is the range of these cars. After all, leave an urban area and good look finding somewhere to change up that battery. Lightyear One is a solar car that hopes to bridge that gap.

SnowWhite – LG’s prototype ice cream maker is very neat but maybe not the best idea

One of the major hits at SXSW this year has been the SnowWhite, LG’s prototype pod based ice cream machine. This thing sounds awesome but honestly but this concept is a miss for us unless those pods are made from at least recyclable plastics or else it’s the Keurig K-cup disaster all over again.

Sound Transmitted by Lasers – MIT develops way to transmit sound through lasers

So what if you want to whisper a secret to your buddy across the room? Right now you probably get their attention and then mouth it or text them. But in the future, the answer could be freaking lasers! Researchers from MIT who clearly spend time and money on mad scientist ideas, have developed a system that can transmit sound through lasers.

GACHA – the autonomous vehicle that can handle the snow

Autonomous vehicles are generally fair weather vehicles. They’re not really great with extreme weather and for the most part are only on the road during nice days. They’re like vintage cars that way only instead of attempting to preserve paint jobs, the reason why autonomous cars are benched during snow is to save lives. GACHA is the first all weather autonomous shuttle that dares to brave the cold.

Acoustic Metamaterial – this innovation is a new way to block out noise

The modern world is super noisy. Technology makes a lot of sounds and many of them aren’t what we could call pleasant. They’re just loud but unfortunately noise canceling options are unwiedly and unattractive. That may change in the future with Acoustic Metamaterial, the new material that can cancel out 94% of sound.

Insulin Pill – forget daily shots, the future of diabetes management might be in pills

Diabetes management is something that people struggle with. To be fair, no one likes needles and having to give yourself an injection daily just isn’t the most awesome thing to have to do. There may be good news on the horizon though. MIT researchers have developed a capsule that gives insulin.

Thin Energy Harvesters – new technology can pull energy from WiFi

Keeping our gadgets up and running is a big deal. They all need to have some sort of charge or else they’re just hunks of metal and plastic. In the future you may not have to worry about finding an outlet, you might be able to recharge your phone with power pulled straight out of the air as scientists have made advancements with thin, energy harvesting covers.
