Algorithm Predicts Earthquakes – machine learning used to predict lab quakes

Earthquakes happen every day around the world and most of them are just tremors but the ones that are bad, well they’re really bad. Many people lose their lives to earthquakes every year and we have no way of knowing if one is coming until things are falling off shelves. Which is why the news of an algorithm that can predict them is so exciting.

NSATMF Lab – this fun website will teach you a thing or two about the world

The world works in mysterious ways. Well, not really, maybe in 1690 it was mysterious but science has pretty much gotten a handle on how things happen on this great blue ball and beyond. Still, some of these concepts may be challenging to explain. The National Science and Technology Medals Foundation: Labs has three fun “experiments” you can use to waste some time learning.

Recycling Light – a new way to bring back old lightbulbs

LED light bulbs have taken over as the more common type of bulb in most homes and offices but these bulbs aren’t exactly everyone’s favorite. Kite Patch – make yourself invisible to tiny blood suckers with this sticker

Mosquitos are the worst. Really, aside from their very needed place in the food chain, they pretty much suck, literally. You can’t just bomb them all from existence (see previous food chain comment) but soon we may be able to keep them from landing on us altogether. The Kite Patch is a sticker that makes you invisible to mosquitos.

RoboBees – the mechanical solution to the honeybee dilemma

You’ve probably seen reports of the honeybee possibly being declared an endangered species recently. This is very bad news because those fuzzy little guys are responsible for pollinating a good deal of our food. We’re still working on how to keep them from dying but technology has another solution, RoboBees, mechanical honeybees.
