Auditorium – gorgeous flash game that sounds just right

I just stumbled across this gorgeous Flash game called Auditorium. The idea is to direct the acoustic particles to the correct audio meter using various tools, but it’s very challenging and there many solutions. Five minutes and I was hooked! Give it a try. [Update – Oops, it’s only a demo at the moment with a full game to follow soon. The creators are also looking for beta testers if you’re keen.] Auditorium is about the process of discovery and…

Temptation Blocker – superb software helps control our sad computer addiction

Temptation Blocker is a freeware program that helps you kick the habit. You know, the procrastinating, time-wasting, life sapping computer addiction you pretend you haven’t got. Hah, don’t try and deny it, what are you doing reading this drivel for if you’re not totally hooked eh? Eh? Answer that if you can. Pathetic. Anyhoo, it’s a simple set up, just tick the programs you want to block out of your life – browsers, email, instant messaging, net phone, you get the…

Notifu – awesome group messaging application gets it right at last!

The Notifu group messaging application is a thing of beauty dear people, and it’s just gone on to the short list as my web application of the year. It provides a simple way to run a group messaging service across multiple platforms. So you can now contact your friends and colleagues automatically via email, SMS, normal phone and IM just by sending off a single message. There’s a bunch of companies out there trying to win in this group messaging business and…

Tribler – completely decentralised BitTorrent client poised to revolutionise file sharing services

Tribler is a new BitTorrent client developed by researchers in the Netherlands, which provides a completely decentralised search and file retrieval layer on top of the existing technology. Yep, we’re talking true Peer2Peer here, no need for PirateBay, Mininova and the rest, just download the client and off you go.   The secret lies in a ‘zero server’ technology called BuddyCast which cuts out spam and interestingly introduces more of a social aspect to file sharing, with tags and ratings….

Mega murals – Eric Grohe’s awesome trompe l’oeil murals give life to drabness

Eric Grohe paints walls. And how. He can transform a dull, lifeless slab of concrete or brick into something amazing (check out the incredible Projects page). Apparently the German paint he uses is super tough and long lasting, which is probably a very good idea. I have a friend, Jeff Raum, who does similar stuff in LA, and I’m always amazed by the capacity of artists of this type to create fine detail on such a large canvas. Well worth a browse if…

JoikuSpot Light – turn your Symbian mobile phone into a WiFi hotspot

JoikuSpot Light is a rather awesome freeware package that installs to your Symbian mobile phone and converts it into a WiFi hotspot. So instead of using that USB dongle on your laptop, you just have to fire up the software on your phone and the laptop will see your phone as a normal WiFi access point. Select it and log on (if you’ve got security set) and off you go, surfing away on the computer (or your iPod Touch!). I…

Spotify – the free music war is over, and we won…

OK, so today I’m going to declare it. The free music war is over, we won, the RIAA and music industry dinosaurs are licked. Forget all the stuff still going on in the courts, the RIAA press releases, they’re all smoke screen. It’s done, folks. Music is free. The battle is now about who controls the access and how it’s monetized, and that’s a completely different thing. The reason for my, some would say foolish, pronouncement is Spotify, which is a…

SanDisk MobileMate Micro Reader – awesome tiny data store on a keychain

The SanDisk MobileMate Micro Reader is one gorgeous piece of gadgetry. It’s designed to read microSD and MemoryStick Micro memory cards via a standard USB port, but the real awesomeness of it comes from the fact that it’s so tiny you can attach it to your keychain and forget it’s there. I just got one from eBay and shoved a spare 4GB microSD card in it for data emergencies, which is great, but what’s really cool is the fact that I can use the reader…

Launchy – awesome pop up command line box frees your mind, unlocks your computer

Launchy is a super cool open source program which gives you total control over your computer applications. Once installed you summon it by hitting alt-space bar and then enter in the command you want. The prog then makes a guess at the function you want (it indexes your programs) and lets you run it with just a quick press of the Enter key. It’s perfect if you have a load of programs installed on your PC and can never remember…

Google 10 to the 100th Project – maximum good for the greater benefit

The new Google 10 to the 100th Project is a great crowdsourcing idea from the search giant. The project is a ‘call for ideas to change the world’. All you have to do is come up with a great idea for helping as many people as possible, and if it gets enough votes, you could receive funding and support to make it all happen. There’s $10 million up for grabs (no, not $700 billion, Frank). Here’s the form for you to fill out. Good…

Ponoko Photomake – if you can shoot it, they can produce it for sale

The clever pholks at Ponoko have come up with Ponoko Photomake, which is a new addition to their clever online craft factory. So now you can draw whatever you want to produce, take and upload a digital photo and their 3D laser cutters will produce your product in quickee snappee time. You’re limited by materials and cutter capabilities of course, which is why jewelry and small toys predominate at the moment, but can’t you just see this a few years down…
