SIMply A-GPS – new SIM card tech can transform every mobile phone into a GPS sat-nav

The SIMply A-GPS SIM card from Sagem-Orga and BlueSky Positioning embeds A-GPS satellite navigation onto a standard 3G/GSM SIM card, thereby turning an ordinary vanilla mobile phone handset into a glorious GPS enabled satellite navigation system. What’s amazing is the fact that they have managed to squeeze the whole GPS receiver, antenna and application software onto a standard sized card, which means it will fit inside every mobile phone on the planet. No software modifications are needed on old handsets, and from…

Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide – the best darn toothbrush in the world?

Personal experience time. I seem to remember that the PR company for this product contacted me ages ago about looking at one of these Braun Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide electronic toothbrushes, and I kind of scoffed. The idea of a wireless brushing guide which told you how long to brush seemed to be too much of a gimmick to be true, so I passed on the opportunity with a bit of a techie sneer. Know what I mean? Well in…

Q10 – the word processing freeware for writers

Q10 is a freeware word processing program which is not designed for you mere mortals. Oh no. This puppy is for us elite, the writers of the world. Those with something important to say. Geddit? Why do I say that? Because it comes with a number of things that you ordinary folk won’t appreciate. Like full screen editing by default. A target word count feature and a timer alarm. To make sure you do your quota no matter what, OK?…

BlueTorrent 5 – ‘Minority Report’ advertising for your shop or service

BlueTorrent 5 brings Minority Report proximity advertising to the high street faster than you can say Tom Cruise rockzorz. OK, so it’s a Bluetooth broadcast program which lets you set up ‘campaigns’ which will beam a file to nearby Bluetooth enabled handsets as they come into range. The campaigns can contain any type of file from an image, to simple text or a vCard or vCalendar file. So set aside your rabid fear of spam for a moment – and it…

Sumo Paint – gorgeous free online image editor

Sumo Paint is a gorgeous free online image editing program from Finland which comes with just about everything you need to create cool stuff. OK, so it’s not going to rock the pro users away from Photoshop, but for the price it’s an awesome product. What I particularly like about it, is the fact that it doesn’t feel like it’s an online app. Apart from the slight delay when it loads up an image file, it looks and feels like…

OpenStreetMap – open source mapping for all

OpenStreetMap is a fabulously ambitious project to map the world and provide it for free to everyone under Creative Commons and open source licences. This is especially important when you remember that sources like Google and Nokia maps are proprietary and have restrictive licenses which prevent unlimited use.   The astonishing thing is just how far they’ve got, from a cursory glance it looks as though most of the major parts of the world are already covered, and from the…

Posterous – ridiculously easy way to publish your own blog

Posterous must be the easiest blogging tool in the known universe and beyond. No sign up, just send an email to [email protected] and the system automatically sets up a free blog for you, drops your content (including photo or other attachments) into a post and fires off a reply to tell you what your new blog URL is. I mean guys, it just doesn’t get any easier than that, right? Not only that, but the service will also automatically repost…

The Studley Toolchest – the lost art of the master craftsman

The Studley Toolchest was crafted over a 30 year period by Henry Studley of Poole Piano Co of Quincy, Massachusetts. As an example of the lost art of the master craftsman we think it can’t be beat. What tool kit will they parade in 2030 as a similar example? A mobile phone repair kit? The workmanship leaps out doesn’t it? It’s made of mostly scrap pieces of ebony, ivory, rosewood and mahogany and houses around 300 of the tools he used in the…

Boxee – the world’s best media manager. Period

I’ve been Alpha testing the new free open source Boxee for Windows media manager and the more I play with it, the more impressed I get. At first glance it’s just another media center software clone, kinda like MythTV, Tvoon and Front Row (here’s an excellent list of media center software) but dig a little deeper and some awesome features start to jump out at you. The first thing to note is the 10 foot interface. Sure most of the better media manager programs…

Tvan – The coolest, toughest camper trailer

Australia has some pretty rugged country so naturally people have devised some pretty ingenious ways of getting around it in comfort and style, like this. The Tvan is a rugged, two berth trailer camper that fixes a lot of problems with existing campers. To start with it’s go-anywhere, seriously go-anywhere. You’d expect nothing less from a company that builds trailers used by the Australian Army, Navy and Airforce. It has a 1,600kg fully articulated coupling that can angle up or…

Oooh look, we’ve made it into a Best of 2008: Top 25 Technology Blogs list. Golly. It’s nice to be recognised as valuable in such esteemed company, eh? Artisteer – the ultimate WordPress theme creator

We’ve tested a fair few web design services and programs in the past, but I’ve got to say that this new Artisteer package has taken the genre to a completely new level. On the face of it it looks like any other DIY page designer, but what makes this one absolutely terrific is the kind of design help you get from the options available on the menu. Spend no more than a couple of minutes hitting the Suggest Design button and…

DoodleBuzz is a new take on displaying news articles from around the internets. Choose a news item you wish to search for and make a squiggle to display relevant articles. You can then drag out the more interesting articles, explore them in detail, see where else they link to or click through to the story itself. Words don’t really do DoodleBuzz justice so go and have a play, it’s very cool and a great way to discover new angles on…
