White & Nerdy – Weird Al Jankovic does genius geek, much laughter ensues

White & Nerdy. Mad Al Jankovic totally nails it with this awesome geek rap video. It’s not exactly new, but oh my golly gosh it’s funny. And Donny Osmond? Just priceless dude, priceless.  “I’ll ace any trivia game you bring on, I’m fluent in Javascript as well as Klingon…” Tags: white+&+nerdy, al+jankovic, video, rap

Hotspot Shield – WiFi security software provides useful anonymous proxy effect too

Hotspot Shield from Anchor Free is a very cool browser add-in which adds VPN security to your WiFi session. Result hack and snoop free surfing over wireless connections. It’s free, works on Mac and PC and also provides anonymous surfing facilities so you can use geo-locked applications from outside the country of origin (which is very useful if your ISP routes its traffic via Katmandu or whatever). It is also incredibly easy to install and use, no fiddling around with settings…

5 MUST HAVE Amazon Shopping Tools – save time, save money, save tears

Here’s a little story. A few days ago I was on the lookout for a Compact Flash drive and went to a nearby camera store to get something. They had 2GB SanDisk III CF cards for £64.99 ($128.00) which I thought was a little expensive, so I went outside, flipped open my mobile phone and surfed to Amazon, where to my utter surprise I found the exact same item for £15.00 ($30.00) plus shipping. Huh? So I bought it immediately via…

Meeting Miser – genius tool for zapping those wasteful meetings

Meeting Miser is an absolute gem of an online tool for calculating just how much money a meeting is costing you in real time. It’s international, comes complete with a built in database of job descriptions and salary rates, and even has an alarm you can set to let you know when the meeting reaches a particular cost. It’s a thing of beauty peeps, and every government and bureaucratic organisation employee should have this installed on their laptop as a…

Eric Joisel – the greatest origami artist in the world?

Frenchman Eric Joisel must be the most skillful origami artist in the known universe. The video documentary speaks for itself, but my question is simple – how does he do that stuff with just folded paper? And no glue! Astonishing. [Via Metafilter]  My personal preference is to try and imitate the philosophy of Master Yoshizawa – to breathe life into the paper and improvise as my as I can. Like a good piece of jazz, every model I produce is…

Nokia perfects the clicky tactile touchscreen – iPhone gnashes teeth, swears revenge

It’s taken them 10 years but Nokia boffins have finally perfected a ‘touch feedback’ touchscreen. Don’t be fooled by simple vibrational imitations folks, this is the real McCoy – you press a key on the screen, and it clicks under your finger with exactly the same sort of fingertip feedback as if you’d pressed a conventional keyboard key. Roope Takala, Senior Program Manager at Nokia’s research labs gave me a demo of the technology in Finland the other day on a…

Musicshake – more music fun than a tub full of honey with sugar sprinkles

MusicShake is being marketed as ‘the easiest way to make music in the world’  and they’ve got a point. What they should also say is that it’s as addictive as…well the most addictive thing on your list of addictive things. There’s lots of music making sites and programs out there, and on the face of it this one is no different. You create tunes by arranging blocks of instrument and vocal samples on a timeline. So far so normal. What…

The DIY Helicopter – man makes helicopters out of old cars and motorbikes, still alive too….

24 year old Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi from Northern Nigeria builds helicopters out of spare parts in his back yard. These magnificent flying machines take him around 8 months to complete and are rudimentary to say the least. This yellow beast has never reached an altitude of more than 7 feet, which makes it less of a helicopter and more of a hovercraft by our reckoning. Still, he’s doing a lot better with his old Toyota and Honda parts than that…

3D Mailbox Level 2: LAX – your email service as an airport sim

3D Mailbox Level 2: LAX. Robert Savage has done it again. He’s launched a new email service based around his sim theme using Los Angeles Airport as the backdrop. Techcrunch’s Michael Arrington hated the first version, but I’m totally down with this weird stuff. Your email messages fly in as Jumbo jets? When you send an email to Malaysia it flies out on a Malaysian Air liveried 747? Australian emails to you arrive on Quantas Qantas? (oops) Cargo planes bring in your attachments?…

Thunderbird Group Sort – my inbox is now truly reclaimed

OK, so you hardcore Thunderbird email client users will know this already, but I’ve just discovered the View-Sort by-Grouped by… feature of the program and it’s going to revolutionise my life. Google Translate Suggest – awesome social translation tool

I don’t know how long this has been going on, but Google looks to have just introduced a new feature on its translation service. Hover your mouse over a Google Translate text block on a website and a box pops up which says – ‘Suggest a Better Translation’. Click on it and you can add your own text suggestion. It’s very similar to the Very Cool Worldwide Lexicon Project, but this one will no doubt get much faster traction because of…

80 of the most dangerous geeks in the world – assassinating Microsoft one clock tick at a time

Here’s 80 of the most dangerous geeks in the world. Otherwise known as attendees at the Linux Kernel Summit 2007. Why dangerous? Well they spearhead a billion dollar program to bring down civilization as we know it, and deliver Open Source software to the modern world. Sticking it to Microsoft is only part of the equation, folks. If these people have their way we’ll all be using nothing but free, high quality software in a few years time, and goodness knows where…
