Broadband in the park – or how mobile broadband snuck up on us when we weren’t looking

It’s 2.00pm on a hot sunny afternoon and I’m blogging this from a deckchair in our local park using the new T-Mobile WebnWalk HSDPA USB Modem…and I’m gobsmacked. Long time readers of The Ferret will know that we’ve been looking forward to the arrival of mobile (i.e. cellular) broadband for ever, although we always figured it would need some fancy new techs to do it. Well we’ve got news for you….high speed mobile broadband is here, it’s affordable and it’s…

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 Hard Drive – 1 TB in your pocket and a miracle in your hand

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1 TB Hard Disk Drive. 1 TB? One terabyte??? ONE THOUSAND thousand thousand thousand bytes??? In a single 3.5 inch drive???? At a $344.99 street price? Are you people all out of your cotton picking tree? Don’t you know that this is ridiculous? They’re Winchester drives for Pete’s sake, they’ll never hold more than 10 MB tops on those slow, clunky 8 inch platters. Everyone knows that. What are you guys smoking? Sheesh! According to Hitachi, the drive…

The Automotive X Prize – probably the best ecological initiative ever

The Automotive X Prize aims to do for alternative fuel vehicles what the Ansari X Prize has done for space travel. Namely move it up a huge notch in development urgency and effectiveness. The goal of the multi-million dollar prize is ‘To inspire a new generation of viable, super-efficient vehicles that help break our addiction to oil and stem the effects of climate change’, and if it achieves that in the 2 year target timescale it will be a whole…

Scribble – fabulous free game

Scribble. If you *really* really want to waste a huge chunk of your life you’ll lock the doors, turn down the lights and play this free MiniClip Flash game immediately (you might want to turn off the music if you’re in the office). It’s an utterly utterly addictive cross between Lemmings and Line Rider, and you may never find time to eat again. I apologise for introducing this to you all, honestly.

Get yer Mojo on…

MojoPac. Hmm…OK, quite simply one of the most brilliant bits of software I’ve seen for a long time. Download and install onto any USB flash drive, (or portable device like an iPod or Smartphone) and suddenly you can carry around your whole computing environment wherever you are. All you need is a Windows XP machine in front of you with a free USB port and you’re good to go. Remember Migo? It’s what Migo should have been. And let’s not talk about U3, eh? Read…

Coolest R/C camera toy ever.

The 1Advanced Technology CVG-A.  Ever wonder how they manage to film those impossible scenes in tight fitting or high places, where a crane or helicopter wouldn’t work? Well now you know. They use one of these UAH (unmanned autonomous helicopter) thingies (aka Coptervision). Super fast at 75 mph, super light, super radio controlled and very very small (under 6 foot long). Here’s a very cool video. Want one, want one.  Dynamic close-range aerial shots are COPTERVISION’s specialty. Due to the agility and size of the…

Photo realistic painting.

This painting of a lady called Tica is just astonishing. Yes painting.  This is a painting completed in February 2005. It was a Portrait Class project that I decided to finish in my spare time after the workshop. It probably took a total of around 65-75 hours to complete. The small images are step by step photographs taken during the painting process, and the large image is the final painting after detail and skin texture are added with an eraser…

Retro Rotary Mobile Phone.

The PRP v1.1 Retro Rotary Mobile Phone. Insert SIM card, pop it in your pocket (!) and bingo, you’ve got the coolest, most awesome mobile phone on the planet. Sit at a table in your local cafe and be the envy of your fellow diners – if they believe you. Even when it rings with an incoming call. Still, what a gas. Tri-band, 4/5 days standby per charge, custom built with 2 weeks delivery. The only slight problem is…ahem…$499.00.  All you have to…

Android dawn.

Well it’s almost here. The age of the android. No, it’s no use you protesting, pretending that it’s still science fiction, turning your face to the wall. Take a look around. At the Japanese, at ReplieeQ2, the latest generation of android from Osaka University. Sure they’re still primitive in many ways, but so were calculators back in the sixties, now look where we are. You’re excited by Robosapien? Pah!

Learn disco and die. Laughing.

Learn Disco. (video) Quite simply the most hilarious thing I’ve seen for years, and worthy of Zefrank, if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s deadly serious. Oh gosh, the hip moves, the suits…my life may never be the same again. Sources (thanks Roosa) tell me that Finnish dance maestro Ake Blomqvist and his wife Leena are well respected dance tutors in Finland, and indeed are still going strong today. Words fail me. Ake you, and your slightly grubby dance trainers, are beyond priceless.

Hidden Passageway.

Hidden Passageway. Oh yes! Cough up $10,000 (or $1500 for the DIY kits) and these guys will craft your own personal hideaway, complete with uber cool ‘push the book’ switches, or rotating lamp switches or tilting candle holder switches or ‘holy batcave, Batman’, just too brilliant for words switches. Check out the animations and videos and then tell me you couldn’t think of a thousand great ways to use this stuff in the den. [Thanks Tom!]  A thief cannot burglarize a…

Astonishing CGI.

The Flowlines CG software from German company Scanlines really does show just how incredible – with a capital I – modern computer generated graphics can be. We’re talking photo-realistic and mind-boggling.  Flowline is Scanline’s Inhouse Software designed to handle all types of effects. It is a new approach to Hydro Fluid Simulation and Rendering for Fire, Water, Oceans, Smoke, Clouds and other effects…
