POP Pager.

POP Pager. Forward email to your cellphone. Free. Do note that this is a .nu address (and I’m not 100% happy with .nu domains for obvious reasons). So caveat emptor, eh?  With this easy to configure mail-to-SMS/paging gateway you can get mail on your cellphone (as SMS message) POPPager is a FREE (for 1 user) application that runs on Win9x or NT 4 and that will monitor a POP3 mailbox. When mail gets sent to the mailbox POP Pager will send…

Xandros Open.

Our favourite Linux distro, Xandros, has just announced Version 3 Open Circulation Edition. Free, as in beer, for non-commercial use. Check it out, because it’s very nice indeed. And it comes with Firefox, Thunderbird and Skype as standard. Open phone calls on open software, cool stuff.  The Open Circulation Edition is a limited version of Xandros Desktop OS that can be download [sic] at no charge and freely distributed to others. It is strictly for non-commercial use, and no e-mail installation…

Free RSS thingy.

Abilon. Yet another free RSS reader. Isn’t Abilon that lawless town in old John Wayne movies? Or is that…?  Abilon displays headlines from RSS (Rich Site Summary – Really Simple Syndication) Channels in an easy to read format. It is small (about 500 kb), fast, and free. Adding new channels is as simple as right-clicking and entering the address of the feed.

Plug and play.

The Kjaerhus Classic Series of VST plug-ins are free software effects available for anyone to download. Should work with most good music sequencers or other VST compatible progs, and save you a bundle on hardware. Nice one!  The goals were simple – make a series of VST plugins that works, feels, looks and most importantly sounds as good as a professional hardware unit. Also, keep it simple and easy to operate. In fact, anyone who knows their way around the…

Word back!

The Word Backup Utility. Use this free Microsoft Word template to backup your computer. Yep you heard me, use Word as a file archiving tool. Colour me astonished! [From the very cool O’Reilly book, Word Hacks].  Use this coded Word template to backup your system. We here at MouseTrax use this system to backup our entire network, in an amazingly short time! Greg even uses this same code for enterprise network backups. Just include the directories you want backed up and provide a…

SyncBack.

SyncBack. Freeware backup program that offers a whole heap of features for a world beating price. I particularly like the idea of the FTP backup option.   Some of SyncBack’s many features include integration with the Windows Task Scheduler, detailed and easy to read log files in HTML format (that can be automatically emailed), simulated backups, file filters, sub-directory selection, copy verification, background backups, auto-close of programs, and more. Includes an extensive context-sensitive help file.

Malicious mellifluence.

Microsoft has released the Malicious Software Removal Tool which can be used from the website or downloaded. What a lovely, caring company.  The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. Microsoft will release…

Kick it!

Quitomzilla. It’s January. Is it time to think happy thoughts? Brave thoughts? Thoughts that may turn your forefinger back to a conventional shade of skin?  Quitomzilla is a Firefox, Thunderbird and Mozilla Suite extension that aims to help you quit cigarettes while you surf the web or wait for new emails. Quitomzilla appears as a small icon in the application (browser or email client) status bar. When you pass the mouse pointer over this icon, a tooltip will be shown…
