WordWeb – a free dictionary and thesaurus for non SUV drivers

Nice to see that the WordWeb dictionary and thesaurus is still around, and in a nice shiny new version too. 150,000 root words, 120,000 synonym sets, direct links to Wikipedia and other online sources all available in a standalone package or as a plug-in for Microsoft Word. It’s still free too, which is great, although the developers now have some rather stringent licensing rules (see below). A required download for writers.  WordWeb is a free English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows,…

Active ISO Burner – quick and easy CD image recorder

Active ISO Burner. I really don’t like having to load up huge great CD recording programs like Nero to do basic simple tasks, like burning an ISO to disk. So this bit of freeware is a pretty cool tool all round really. Just fire it up, point it towards your ISO image file and bingo, one CD/DVD created as required.  Active ISO Burner is a freeware application that will allow you to burn an ISO image file to CD-R, DVD-R,…

Sandboxie – the anti-malware buffer zone for your PC

Sandboxie is a nifty piece of freeware which shields your hard disk from any and all malevolent intent. It’s kind of like running a cache buffer zone which stops malware installing itself on your disk. Run a program or your browser in a Sandboxie zone and when you’re finished you can just delete the zone and start again fresh. Anything that was downloaded or installed during the session is wiped out. The idea is great, especially if you spend a…

Tubes – send photos to your Mom’s screensaver

Tubes. Tubes lets you set up a simple and automatic file sharing link between remote computers, so you can share stuff with anyone instantly. Just in time for Mother’s Day, the company has released a screencast which shows how you can share your photos with Mom by setting up a Tubes link on her laptop. Download the software, set it up and when you get back home drag and drop your latest images onto the application to share. Wow, amazing. It means…

HD Tune – check on your hard disk health for free

HD Tune is a freeware hard disk diagnosis and benchmarking utility for Windows which is pretty cool. You can use it to check on the health of your disk, keep an eye on its temperature and even show the performance of your disk in graphical form. It’s one of those little utilities that could be very useful if you suspect that your disk is on its way out. The company also makes a similar utility for flash drives but it’s not free….

Switch – free audio file conversion software

Switch Audio File Converter. An Australian freeware program which lets you convert audio files from one format to another. Stuff like MP3 to .wav, .au to .ogg, etc etc. There’s a free and Plus version, and the program runs on Windows, Mac and Linux (using Wine). The company supplies a bunch of other programs which are worth checking out too. What with this for audio and Super for video, file conversion is getting a lot easier. [Thanks Mike]  Switch Plus…

FoxTorrent – BitTorrent in the browser

FoxTorrent. New Firefox extension gives you BitTorrent straight from the browser. Just navigate to your nearest friendly torrent link and click. Voila, a download dialogue pops up. Another excellent Firefox tool.  Foxtorrent takes a different approach than most torrent clients in regard to handling torrent files — it captures the click in Firefox and downloads the torrent file itself. Sometimes websites do tricky things such as putting the torrent files behind cookie-logins. If you’re having trouble with a particular website, ask the discussion…

TripStalker – grab the best travel bargains automatically

TripStalker. Download the free program, register and you can then set up continuous running searches for flights, hotels and car hire. You can also specify your target price, and delivery mechanism, including email, SMS or desktop pop-up. I’m generally a little wary of these ‘agent’ applications since in my experience they rarely do as well as a simple, blunt human powered search, but hey, I’m willing to be convinced otherwise. Worth a look (although it’s a shame they’ve gone the .NET route).  TripStalker is an automated software application that takes your…

The Best Extensions for Thunderbird 2.0. Four add-ons for the Mozilla email client which offer extended features. Have I told you how much I am loving my move away from Outlook Express to TB? DVD Flick – make DVDs out of your video clips for free

DVD Flick. A nice bit of freeware to turn those video clips you’ve got hanging around into a DVD. Just add them to a project and burn. Nifty and rather useful if you’re like me and have got a heap of clips lying around unwatched and a-wastin’. Supports all the major video file types and codecs. (watch out for a broken mirror on the download page).  DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring…

Better Gmail – Firefox extension improves Gmail

Better Gmail. The folks at Lifehacker have collected a bunch of Gmail add-ons Greasemonkey scripts and collated them all in a single Firefox Extension. The result is pretty cool if you’re a Gmail user. Go get (although do remember that Greasemonkey cam be a bit of a dangerous tool in the wrong hands).  Gmail’s good, but it could be better. We’ve featured several Greasemonkey scripts that enhance Gmail in lots of different ways – like adding saved searches, attachment icons, label colors, keyboard…

Mpire Shopping Companion – browser plugin for instant price checks

The free Mpire Shopping Companion provides an instant price comparison in your browser window while you’re doing online shopping. It’s available as a plugin for Firefox or IE7 and actually works as advertised. Of course it doesn’t handle every store or every product, but it’s still a pretty neat way of checking around to see whether you’re getting the best bargain. How long before online stores start blocking it, I wonder?  While shopping your favorite online stores, the Mpire shopping companion gives…

Blog Flux Commentful – track your comments from the status bar

Blog Flux Commentful is a new service that monitors all the various comments you make on blogs and forums via a neat Firefox extension or a bookmarklet. It makes it super easy to keep track of questions you’ve  asked or comments you’ve made around the Web by storing all of them in one location. It’s not the first of its kind, but I like the simplicity of the implementation. Nice.  Install the FireFox extension. Whenever you are on a page you…

The good folk at Grisoft have released the AVG Anti-Rootkit product which will locate and remove rootkit malware from your computer. You know, code which is used to hide things like trojans and keyloggers etc. It’s too early to say how effective it is against the most stubborn versions out there, but it’s definitely worth keeping in mind just in case you ever have a need.  AVG Anti-Rootkit is a powerful tool with state-of-the-art technology for detection and removal of rootkits….
