YWriter – the free word processor for novelists

YWriter is a free word processor designed specifically for novelists and authors in general. It won’t write the thing for you, but it does help you chop your opus up into chunks to make it easier to manage. The program also provides tools to manage characters, scenes, goals and timelines, which are the bits which often get in the way of your creativity.   The Australian software developer, Simon Haynes,  is also a published author of space opera, so if…

PrestaShop – open source e-commerce shopping cart

PrestaShop is an open source e-commerce shopping cart for website owners and wannabe web tycoons. The devs claim it’s all Ajaxified and lightweight (which means your buyers should have an easier and faster experience at the checkout on your site) but as with all these things it’s really a matter of trying it out first to see whether it fits your needs better than a hosted solution. One good sign is the busy forums which indicate a lot of users,…

Auditorium – gorgeous flash game that sounds just right

I just stumbled across this gorgeous Flash game called Auditorium. The idea is to direct the acoustic particles to the correct audio meter using various tools, but it’s very challenging and there many solutions. Five minutes and I was hooked! Give it a try. [Update – Oops, it’s only a demo at the moment with a full game to follow soon. The creators are also looking for beta testers if you’re keen.] Auditorium is about the process of discovery and…

Debut – freeware video recorder software is a bit of a show off

Debut Video Capture is a pretty cool piece of freeware video grabbing tech. What’s cool is the range of things it can do. Not just screen grabbing, but also webcam recording and screencast capture. All rolled up into one nice and easy interface. It’ll even do stills from a video capture on the fly. Oh and did I mention it will capture from your camcorder via the USB port as well? Yep, versatile. Definitely one to keep in the toolbox….

Laptop Alarm – protect your laptop in public places

Laptop Alarm. Software emits a piercing alarm if the power cable is unplugged, the laptop is shut-down or the mouse removed. Clearly designed for those times when you’re sitting in a public place (e.g. a library or local coffee shop) and need to use the restroom. Personally I’d take the laptop with me, as I somehow get the feeling that a loud alarm is not going to stop your machine disappearing out the door if it’s a Macbook Air. Know…

Lunascape – the world’s fastest ever web browser?

Lunascape is being billed as the world’s fastest ever web browser, and we’re going to be charitable and say…well very little. It’s an early codebase – alpha in fact – and hugely ambitious since it incorporates the three biggest browser engines in existence, Webkit, Trident and Gecko. But you know what, apart from that it comes across as pretty ordinary. Especially since we Firefox users can do much of the same thing with a simple plugin. We’ll take another look…

TrackMania Nations Forever – freeware arcade car racing game goes vrooom…

TrackMania Nations Forever is a free arcade car racing game which looks like a lot of fun. There’s solo and multiplayer modes, a shed load of stunt tracks and apparently millions of players going head to head at any one time. The graphics are enticing enough to keep you interested, and the in-game editor to create your own tracks is just icing on the cake. Vrooom…!   A free game in the truest sense of the word, TrackMania Nations Forever…

Little Shoot – P2P plugin offers searchability

Little Shoot is a new P2P file sharing plugin which gives you instant search of several content sources, such as Flickr, YouTube, Limewire and the Little Shoot network itself. The key to the product is simplicity, not just downloads but also sharing. It’s all built around your browser and there’s a simple search box, plus an equally easy to use Publish tab, all of which should make it a cinch to share your documents and media with anyone anywhere. The…

Rockbox – open source replacement firmware for your MP3 player

Rockbox is open source firmware which you can install on your MP3 player to replace the proprietary stuff already on there. Why? Well, it’s written ‘by users, for users’ and aims to provide a higher quality audio experience, plus customisability and plugins. For example some of the cool features include gapless playback, a spoken word interface and Doom! support. Sounds excellent methinks. Of course your warranty will wing its way out the window once you install the code, but hey, it’s the stuff revolutions…

Karen’s Alarm Clock – turn your laptop into a $10.00 alarm clock

Karen’s Alarm Clock is basic, yes, utilitarian almost. But look closer and you’ll see that it is a pretty useful tool. For a start you can set up five different alarm times, with a choice of audio file alarm or even a cd track. And look at the large pretty green numerals. Wonderful.  Turn your $2,000 computer into a $20 alarm clock! Set up to five different alarm times. Wake up to a beep, any wave or MIDI file, even…

Process Lasso – fire and forget computer system balancing

Process Lasso is a neat little freeware utility that improves your computer’s responsiveness during peak load situations. If you’ve ever sat there twiddling your thumbs while the machine grinds to a halt trying to cope with a single heavyweight task (like rendering), then you’ll recognise the problem. Oh, and it works. I’ve just tried it in Thunderbird, doing a search in a massive folder – which normally crunches everything to a halt – and my laptop has kept its cool. Nice one,…

HD Clone – the universal cloning tool

HD Clone is a free hard disk cloning program which will let you create and store an image of your disk in case of problems or failure. This sort of tool is uber useful for migrating your data to a new hard disk, or for restoring your stuff if your hard disk crashes and burns. I use True Image because I’ve had it for a long while and I trust it, but free is a hard price to beat (although…

PC Fixer – free Windows system fixer utility offers some useful tools

PC Fixer is a free Windows diagnostic and repair tool which does a pretty thorough job of scanning and recommending. It’s a small download, but be aware that it won’t run without an Internet connection (probably due to the need to serve adverts while it’s running) which means it’s useless for fixing serious Internet or wireless networking problems. Nevertheless it offers enough value to warrant getting a cautious thumbs up from me. There’s a useful registry cleaner included as well as…
