Temptation Blocker – superb software helps control our sad computer addiction

Temptation Blocker is a freeware program that helps you kick the habit. You know, the procrastinating, time-wasting, life sapping computer addiction you pretend you haven’t got. Hah, don’t try and deny it, what are you doing reading this drivel for if you’re not totally hooked eh? Eh? Answer that if you can. Pathetic. Anyhoo, it’s a simple set up, just tick the programs you want to block out of your life – browsers, email, instant messaging, net phone, you get the…

Treesize Free – excellent freeware helps you identify space hogs on your hard drive

Treesize Free is one of my favourite freeware programs, because it’s so darn useful. Every so often I pop it open and press scan to take a look at the files and folders that are hogging space on my hard drive. And I never cease to be amazed at the results. For instance yesterday I ran a quick scan and discovered that Joost is using a whopping 1 GB + of my drive for goodness knows what (caching?). And that…

Super Bluetooth Hack – hack your way into someone else’s mobile phone via Bluetooth

Super Bluetooth Hack. There are a few reasons why I don’t keep Bluetooth permanently activated on my cell phone, and this type of program is one (battery life is another!). Although this is not strictly speaking a full hack (the first time you use it, the target phone has to grant access) once you’ve got permission you can run riot on the other handset at will (as long as you’re within Bluetooth range of course). Like browse contacts, make calls, read…

Icon Restore – save and restore your desktop icons at the click of a button

Icon Restore lets you save and restore your Windows desktop icon layout at the click of a mouse button. Well actually you need to right mouse click on My Computer and select Save Desktop Icon Layout. Then if your icons get scrambled you restore them by doing the same process and selecting Restore… Neat.  After installing Icon Restore, simply place your icons wherever you want them on your desktop, right click My Computer (or any ‘system’ icon) and left click on “Save…

Digsby – the ultimate messaging tool?

Digsby must rank as the most complete communication tool out there at the moment. Why? Well, for a start it supports just about everything in existence except Skype chat. We’re talking MSN, AOL, Facebook and all the rest of the IM chat bunch. Oh and it’s free. You can also add POP and webmail notifications to stay on top of email and – get this – track your Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn stuff too. We’re thinking that once you dive…

Tweakmaster – tune up your computer’s broadband connection and zooooom…..

Tweakmaster is a freeware broadband connection optimizer which comes with all sorts of cool features to help you improve your throughput. The best bit is a easy to use wizard which you can set and forget in about 20 seconds. I used it recently to try and enhance one of my ADSL connections and it worked (giving me a 5x improvement). You’ll have to register to get rid of the freeware nags, and there’s a Pro version too if you feel the need…

Tribler – completely decentralised BitTorrent client poised to revolutionise file sharing services

Tribler is a new BitTorrent client developed by researchers in the Netherlands, which provides a completely decentralised search and file retrieval layer on top of the existing technology. Yep, we’re talking true Peer2Peer here, no need for PirateBay, Mininova and the rest, just download the client and off you go.   The secret lies in a ‘zero server’ technology called BuddyCast which cuts out spam and interestingly introduces more of a social aspect to file sharing, with tags and ratings….

JoikuSpot Light – turn your Symbian mobile phone into a WiFi hotspot

JoikuSpot Light is a rather awesome freeware package that installs to your Symbian mobile phone and converts it into a WiFi hotspot. So instead of using that USB dongle on your laptop, you just have to fire up the software on your phone and the laptop will see your phone as a normal WiFi access point. Select it and log on (if you’ve got security set) and off you go, surfing away on the computer (or your iPod Touch!). I…

Screamer Radio – freeware internet radio software for your PC

Screamer Radio is a freeware Internet radio Windows program from Swedish coder David Zidar. Although it looks quite basic, it sports some nice features, including automatic recording, stereo effects and a useful and sophisticated set of preset stations organised by genre, language and region. It’s fun, and definitely worth a look.  There is little reason to listen to commercial FM radio anymore, it is an old medium that provides little choice of music and is saturated with ads. For the…

Learn Chinese Characters – freeware program lets you learn the language from the comfort of your own servant’s quarters

Learn Chinese Characters. Not that we want to suggest anything, of course, but now may be a good time to think about downloading this little freeware program to brush up on the old Chinese lingo a bit. Just in case the credit crunch doesn’t pan out as expected, know what we mean?  LCC (Learn Chinese Characters) is a multimedia program which lets you learn it by yourself.
