Launchy – awesome pop up command line box frees your mind, unlocks your computer

Launchy is a super cool open source program which gives you total control over your computer applications. Once installed you summon it by hitting alt-space bar and then enter in the command you want. The prog then makes a guess at the function you want (it indexes your programs) and lets you run it with just a quick press of the Enter key. It’s perfect if you have a load of programs installed on your PC and can never remember…

Pazera Free Audio Extractor – strip out audio from any video file for free and easy

Pazera Free Audio Extractor is a nice new freeware program which strips out audio from just about any video format around. It’s fast, very simple and ultra customisable (you can even specify a target size for the resulting audio file), will cope with VOB files and you can also use it to convert audio formats if you have the need. I stripped out some audio into MP3 from a .VOB file and it worked perfectly, and the resulting file was reassuringly…

Free Studio – 20 cool free video utilities in one nifty package

The Free Studio people have bundled up their complete suite of video utilities into one easy to download and easy to use package, which is really rather fine. So now you can get 20 cool video editing tools for doing things like ripping DVDs, converting video to iPod or iPhone format, rotating video and even audio conversion all from one menu. Nice…(and yes we have mentioned these guys before when the software was all separated and stuff…)  All free software…

Koloroo – the colour scheme finder

Strictly speaking the Koloroo colour scheme editor is not freeware so much as ‘careware’. Before you download it, you must agree to do something nice for someone. I kinda like it. They claim over 100 million color scheme possibilities, via the six main theories. That should be enough, eh?  Simply drag your cursor over the color wheel and watch as complete color schemes are generated and displayed in real-time. You can refine your color selection with the hue, saturation, and brightness…

Splits and joins – a couple of small multimedia tools to make life easier

Not sure about you, but I quite often find myself needing to join and/or split up audio and video material, and so I’m glad I’ve found these freeware tools to help me do it quickly and easily. AVSplit. Let’s you cut and join up .avi and DivX video files. You can also clip (trim) a video and everything is done with minimal loss of video quality and without bloating the resultant file sizes. Shuangs Audio Joiner. Nice small tool for…

FormatFactory – multifunction media converter

FormatFactory is a freeware media converter, rather like Super. But I prefer this interface, and if anything it works better and faster than Super. I tried a conversion from a VOB video file to avi in low web friendly format and it came out with excellent quality and a nice file size. It includes a DVD ripper for backing up your discs, and has a video and audio repair feature which is nice. Trendy adopters will be pleased to see iPhone…

YPlay – tiny but flexible freeware music player

YPlay is not grand and it’s not fancy, it’s just a freeware music player. Anyhoo, this one grabs my fancy because it plays Ogg, MIDI and FLAC as well as MP3. And most importantly, as the developer himself says – “I’m not pretending it has more features than the other programs (it doesn’t) or that it’s better in any way. It’s just smaller, simpler and lighter.”  As of version 1.0.22, yPlay has an option to speak all controls (and file names)…

Ubiquity – the awesome web task engine for Firefox

I’ve been playing with Mozilla’s new free Ubiquity plugin for Firefox and it’s fab. It basically provides instant access to a whole bunch of web applications and other useful tools via a really easy to use command line interface. Now don’t get scared, it’s really really easy to use and incredibly flexible. To access the proglet you hit CTRL key and spacebar together, and up pops a small box waiting for your instructions. There are 50 commands in existence right…

iPod Audio Book Maker – easily convert MP3 files to audio books

This MP3 to iPod Audio Book Converter freeware takes ordinary MP3 files and turns them into either a single large iPod audio book file or separate files. By doing this you can take advantage of the iPod’s bookmarking functionality and resume where you left off listening, and you can also adjust the reading speed. Both of which are pretty cool. I suspect it will also be very useful for anyone who wants to combine a set of podcasts – like a lecture series…

The Wyzo Bittorrent Browser – free Firefox offshoot offers integrated Bittorrent downloading

The Wyzo Browser is the latest freeware offering from the guys who brought us the excellent FireTorrent Bittorrent plugin for Firefox. They’ve clearly decided to forego upgrading Firetorrent to work with the latest Firefox 3.x, and instead have brought out their own web browser based on Firefox which incorporates the Bittorrent feature as standard. The product also offers a mega search engine start page and a handy small bookmarks bar to get to favourite sites faster, but overall I’m not sure they’ve…

PagePainter – the free web page color scheme editor

PagePainter is an interesting new freeware program which lets web designers test out different colour schemes on their page designs without fiddling around with source code and stuff. Fire up the program, load the target html page that you want to work on and use the PagePaint tools to switch colours, test out different schemes and even suggest various optimum colour combinations based on your key palette. It’s not an easy program to get to grips with, so you’ll need to run through the…

Opentape – free open source tool to create your own online mixtapes

Opentape is a free open source package to allow anyone to create their own version of the currently defunct Muxtape online mixtape application. Download the software, unzip and then upload the files to your own webserver and you’re good to go. Your own personal playlist creator. You’ll need to upload your choice of legally owned MP3 music of course, but that’s part of the fun isn’t it? The interface is spartan but very usable, and there’s all the functionality you’ll need,…

Circle Dock – give your PC a free and cool looking Mac style dock

Eric Wong’s Open Source Circle Dock program gives Windows users the same kind of cute, useful application launch functionality as the Apple Mac dock, but arranged in a circular motif rather than along the bottom of the screen. As well as looking very pretty, it is ultra-configurable, and offers mouse wheel rotation to make it Lazy Susan easy to get to your favourite applications fast. It is also multilingual and needs the .NET framework to be installed. Please note that this is Alpha level code,…

Google Chrome – nice…but needs a little extra sauce…

I’ve been playing with the new Google Chrome web browser over the past few days and I’m impressed. It’s fast, clean and I really like the combo search and address box. It means you don’t have to differentiate between doing a web search or entering a URL, you just type in the required text and boom, the browser goes off and returns the right content. Very slick. It desperately needs plugins though, because every Firefox user relies on at least…

Keycounter – keep track of your keystrokes and mouse movements each day

Keycounter is a small free utility that keeps track of every single key press you make every minute and whether the mouse has moved. At the end of the day it will then display a graph of your work, along with clear evidence of the period when you went skulking off to the coffee machine for an hour at around 4pm. So waddya know, the ultimate geek watchdog. Keycounter provides a way of keeping track of when you’ve been active…
