QuickReader – beautiful free iPhone eBook app helps you read faster, remember more

QuickReader is a lovely looking new eBook reader with a difference, in that it comes with a cool speed reading function to help you scan pages faster and remember more information. It uses some kind of fancy speed reading tech to achieve this feat, and is totally customisable in just about every conceivable way. Speeds from 100 to 2000 word per minute (what’s that, War & Peace in 20 seconds?), colours, backgrounds, fonts, line spacing, the list goes on. It…

Portable Apps – Now with Google Chrome and Skype

The always useful Portable Apps has added freeware to its application suite. Until now only open source software has been included (Firefox, Thunderbird, Audacity, Torrent, GIMP et al) but that’s all about to change. The first applications to be added include; Google Chrome Browser, 2X Client, FreeCommander, SpyDLLRemover and something called Skype, with more freeware programs on the way. With awesome freeware like this added to the mix the floodgates are open and Portable Apps can only get better. PortableApps.com,…

TinEye – cool free reverse image search engine really works

TinEye is a very cool search engine for images which makes it a snap to find similar or identical images around the web. Upload an image file or give the service a URL of an image and within seconds it will find similar or identical images. I have to say it’s one of the most impressive vertical search services I’ve seen in a long while, and despite the fact that it obviously has limitations with some images, it works surprisingly…

Stylizer – freeware CSS editor lets you craft gorgeous websites…maybe

Stylizer is a free CSS editor which is designed to let non-coder people wrestle the CSS of their site into shape using an on-screen menu system. The heart of the software lies in its real time preview which lets you manipulate and tweak the page right before your eyes, which makes the whole process of alignment and beauty much easier for the brain. There are a fair few freebie CSS editors around, but none as ambitious as this one, and there…

Livebrush Lite – freeware makes for cool innovative drawing tool

Livebrush Lite is a very clever Adobe Air freeware program which offers a new twist on the old painting/drawing theme. It works by adding in random ‘motion’ effects to your line strokes, which makes for some exotic and interesting results. Play around with it for a few moments and you can get some really lovely images laid down (although I still haven’t worked out how to get it to output colour). Nice bit of programming, David. The Pro version ($10) offers more…

Dead Man’s Switch – send email from the afterlife

[photo] While dead men may tell no tales, there’s now a way for them to send emails. Dead Man’s Switch is a free service where you can compose meaningful messages to be sent out should you shuffle off the mortal coil leaving important unfinished business, like who gets your collection of monitor pets. Although, if it was that important, you probably should have written a proper will. All you do is compose your emails, then wait. The service will email…

TweetMyPC – free program lets you control your computer using Twitter

TweetMyPC is a free program which lets you control your Windows computer using Twitter. That’s right, all you need to do is install the software on the target PC, set up a special Twitter account for the machine (disabling public access via the Protect My Tweets setting of course!) and log in on the PC. From then on you will be able to shutdown or restart your computer, grab a file from your hard disk (via your email account) or even take a screenshot just by sending…

PhotoJoy – freeware turns your photos into wallpapers, screensavers and widgets

PhotoJoy is a free program from the Incredimail people designed to help you make the most of all those digital photos lying around on your hard disks. It’s structured like the wallpaper products, in that you install the client which then accesses web based templates, so you’ll need an Internet connection to get the best out of it. Once installed you can set up screensavers, desktop widgets and wallpaper ‘collages’ into which the software will stream your choice of holiday…

SeaMonkey – a cute but strangely irrelevant all-in-one Internet suite from Mozilla

Back in the day web browsers were not content to stay simple but bloated into huge sprawling products called Internet Suites. Well hey ho, here we are a decade later and what do I spy – why the SeaMonkey Internet Application Suite. My how time flies…in a circle. This suite of net tools contains a browser (based on Firefox ‘natch) an email client, HTML editor for creating web pages, IRC chat client and some web dev tools. It’s a lovely…

Jotti’s malware scan – one online virus scanner to rule them all

Here at the Ferret we don’t like malware. But scanning for it can be a mite tedious when you’re just about to get stuck into testing the latest greatest free application and you realise your virus definitions are out of date. That’s why we’ve reviewed several free online virus scanners in the past. But if you’re a bit more paranoid you probably wouldn’t trust the results of just one virus scanner, which is when Jotti’s malware scan would come in…

Google Wave Add-on For Firefox – free plugin brings Wave to your browser

I’ve been playing around with Google Wave for a few days now, and it’s definitely a fascinating piece of technology. The idea is to drag email and text communications into the 21st century by restructuring the way we chat with each other. As with all innovative tech, it’s going to take a while to see what benefit this initiative will bring to the table, but I’m tending to agree with Daniel Tenner in his view that at the very least…

Myna – Online audio editor

Aviary is racking up quite a collection of birds in it’s online freeware stable. The latest noisy edition is Myna an online audio editor, and it looks fantastic. Basically it’s a multi-track audio editor but for an online application it’s remarkably agile. There’s drag and drop clip placement, snap to tempo and extremely simple fading and panning all done using the mouse. As well as offering the editor, Aviary have also partnered with APM Music to offer a huge library…
