Halfdone Unknown Devices – freeware identifies those naughty unknown devices on your PC

This Halfdone Unknown Devices freeware gets our vote as a pretty useful utility to have in the toolchest. Fire it up and it will scan your computer for devices and let you know what they are, so you can take appropriate action. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of one of those naff yellow question marks in Device Manager you’ll be grateful for this puppy. Hey, it’ll even give you the Product Key used for your version of…

Basketbuster – Firefox addon guarantees you get the best deal available

Basketbuster is another of those find the best price plugins for Firefox, but this one offers a few differences which make it rather useful. For one thing, it has a nav bar traffic light alert which tells you when there’s a a deal to be had for the  product you’re browsing. Secondly, I like the sidebar implementation which gives you the direct bargain (or coupon) on the page and then the alternatives from other sites. It’s clean and easy to…

Picasa 3.6 – my how you’ve grown…

We last took a look at Picasa back in 2008 when it was in Google beta. As we noted then, it looked pretty cool, and had a decent enough feature set to match anything on the market at the time. The other day I installed the latest Picasa Version 3.6 and wow, it’s grown up into quite a product. The basics are all still there of course, but the feature set has now exploded beyond the far galaxies. The emphasis of…

Rainmeter – the free desktop customiser for Windows

Rainmeter is a freeware Windows desktop customisation tool, which also appears to exist as a resource meter tool. This strange dual life doesn’t seem to have hurt it though, and both versions seem to be thriving. There’s a huge library of skins available, and you can tweak the information it puts on your desktop to your heart’s content, y’know stuff like CPU, memory use, application launcher, weather etc etc. The good news is it installs quickly and cleanly, the less…

Freefixer – freeware lets you take control of software running in the background on your computer

One of the big problems with the later versions of Windows is you really have very little idea what programs and processes are running on your computer at any one time, which can cause performance problems or even mask a malware attack. Freefixer is a free program for Windows which helps you identify and terminate software and processes running on your computer. The utility keeps tabs of stuff which is legitimate and leaves it up to you to stop stuff which you…

Tweak Me! – freeware lets you remove all those really annoying Windows bits

All you have to do is check or uncheck little boxes and press the save button and you can completely alter the way your Windows system looks and works. Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2 – freeware gives you a rocket fast Internet connection

The Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2 is a free program designed to speed up your Internet connection. It’s easy to use, and fast, and actually does seem to work. I ran through a quick tweak and reboot and instantly increased my DSL connection by 20%, at least for the download part. Nothing seems to lift my upload speeds beyond a paltry 512kbps. There’s also a manual settings option for the hard core l33t tweakers. Definitely worth a download, although it does ask…

Command & Conquer goes freeware – classic games available as free download

Games giant Electronic Arts is about to release Command & Conquer 4, and as part of the promotion, it’s released the original classic Command & Conquer games as freeware downloads. I grabbed Tiberian Sun a few days ago and was quickly transported back to a time when sleep was a luxury I couldn’t afford. Unfortunately I got wiped fairly rapidly, but I’m willing to relearn my ‘build and mass attack’ strategy again. Oh yes. Tags: freeware, command+&+conquer, games
