Free Games Corner – Where Is 2012?

This week in Free Games Corner we end 2011 by asking “Where is 2012?“. Well you really don’t have to wait too long to get the answer to that question in real life, in fact in a few time zones theansweris very, very, obvious at this point, but none-the-less that shouldn’t stop you delving into the watercolorwintryworld of this seasonal game-let fromPastel Games. In the game you play the role of a very gnome-esque Santa, searching for that young whipper-snapper…

With the rise of social networking, you’ll be hard pressed to find any teenager that doesn’t have a Facebook account. And even though the minimum age to sign up is 13, many younger kids still have one. If you’re a parent who worries about what your child sees and does on the site, perhaps even to the point of not letting them have an account, you might be interested in Minor Monitor.

Cold Turkey keeps you off of distracting sites when you need to work

Self-discipline is an important characteristic to have. Unfortunately sites like Facebook, Twitter and Reddit are constantly there to challenge our ability to stay on task, what with their constantly-updated content and all. If you find yourself wandering off to these and other sites when you should be working or studying, then perhaps you need something to help you stay focused, or at least prevent you from visiting those sites.

Use Spool to save websites and videos to your phone for offline browsing

I spend a lot of time online for work, and tend to come across articles and videos that I want to look at, but don’t have time for. Usually this means I’ll either have a window dedicated to stuff I want to read later, or I’ll just bookmark them, and hope that I remember to actually look at them. It would be great if I could just send them all to my phone, and have them ready to read or…

AllMyApps makes re-installing software on a new machine easier than ever

Whenever I reinstall Windows on any of my computers, the first thing I do is go to Ninite and select the usual freeware that I use on my machines. I love it, because once I make my selections and download the installer, it does all of the downloading and installing for each of the programs for me. Well a new service called AllMyApps looks to do something very similar, but offers you much more.

DeSOPA allows you to get around SOPA-enforced DNS blocks

If you’re concerned about the repercussions of the much-debated SOPA bill that’s making waves here in the US, then you might start looking at ways to get around the DNS blocking that it could potentially lead to. Thankfully, there are already people out there working on ways to get around the blocks, should they happen. And, if you know anything about how DNS actually works, you’ll know that it’s not actually that hard to get around.

Report bad cab drivers with the ReportATaxi app

When you’re traveling in a large city, sometimes the best way to get around is to call a cab. It’s nice to know that cabs are regulated by a governing body, as this means that fares are kept (somewhat) reasonable, and that your driver will hopefully drive safely and treat you right. However, you still get bad drivers from time to time. But when you’re busy traveling and rushing to get somewhere, do you really have time to call up…

Free Games Corner – Mysostis, Mysterious Island 49 & Matryoshka

This week in free games corner we ask “but is it art?” whilst we point & click our way through some puzzles and problems, because whilst we’re just in it for the cheap thrill of a free web game or three, some of the people who make these things actually know what they are doing and do a very nice job of lovingly crafting something for our eyeballs and eardrums to feast upon. Bless ’em. Myosotis Chapter 1 takes a…

Flagfox lets you quickly look up a websites physical location, and more

Have you ever been browsing a site and wondered exactly where the information was coming from? No, I don’t mean where the writer found the story, or even where the company that owns the site is located. Rather, have you been curious as to where the server itself was sitting? With Flagfox, you won’t have to wonder any longer. This Firefox extension will display a small flag of the country where the server hosting the website resides. You can then…

Graph Words is a visual online thesaurus

One of my biggest pet peeves when reading just about anything is to come across the same word written several times in the same paragraph. If possible, I like to liven up my text by using synonyms, rather than simply repeating myself. If one is stumped, the most useful resource is a thesaurus, as it will provide you with a variety of words or phrases that can be used. I’ve used a number of them online, but I think Graph…

Open Letter To Mozilla – Please Stop Chasing The Version Rainbow and Fix Your Firefox Web Browser

I used toadorethe Firefox web browser. Now all I seem to do is spend time moaning when it hangs for seconds at a time, moves like treacle or worse just crashes on me. Do a search for Firefox sucks and you’ll get back 8,340,000 results, which is incredible for a product that just a few years ago was phenomenally stable and popular. What happened guys? How could you let a poster child of the open source movement become a Windows…
