Wikimedia Commons – donate and share your photos with the world [Freeware]

Have you ever thought of using the camera embedded in your mobile phone for something useful? After all taking snaps of the dog barking at squirrels can get a tad boring after a while, and then what are you left with? Pictures of your friends throwing up at parties, that’s what.

Chains – use your phone to help change your habits and your life [Freeware]

We all have stuff we would like to deal with, bad habits, emotional baggage, various bits and pieces of our psyche that need…ahem…polishing. The typical solution is either to ignore the issue, or pay someone to listen to us blabber away as we try and work it out through words. Neither option really helps that much, although it does deliver quite a bit of cash to the therapist profession.

Device Doctor – free Windows program keeps your computer drivers up to date and humming [Freeware]

The dirty little secret of Windows is that most problems and error messages you get, including the rather horrible blue screen of d.e.a.t.h come from broken, corrupted or missing drivers. All of which can be prevented if you maintain a healthy relationship with your machine and keep the drivers checked and updated regularly.

The Met Police Little Book of Big Scams – how to spot if someone’s trying to take you for a ride [Freeware]

There are quite a few naughty people about, who are anxious to part us from our money as quickly and as illegally as they can. The obvious ones come at you full frontal, while the subtle ones will fleece you swiftly and cleanly without you knowing a thing about it. Fraudsters like this are everywhere, so it’s good to see that the Met Police (aka in polite society as London’s Finest) has produced a 36 page ebook outlining some very…

CheatBook Database 2013 – the ultimate game cheat guide, hidden amongst five pages of deliberately confusing Download ads from Google [Freeware]

There’s nothing more satisfying than struggling with a really hard boss section in your favorite game and beating it after a lengthy amount of attempts. Aw c’mon, who are we kidding, repeating a battle over and over again gets old really fast, which is why things like cheat sites and walkthrough guides exist. For us lazy pigs.

Commotion – open source tools to create your own private internet [Freeware]

One of the things that is so great about the Internet is its ability to bring people together, but often that precise quality becomes a victim of outside influences, whether it’s bad weather breaking cables or oppressive regimes shutting down access. This is why there’s a new movement growing up around the idea of building private Internets, also called mesh networks, which can survive when things get rough.

XNRetro – turn your crisp focused photos into blurred retro and impress your friends [Freeware]

We have to confess to being rather confused by the current retro image fetish which seems to have started around the time Instagram hit the streets. So what’s it about? Is it because our digital cameras are too perfect, and we hate perfection? Or is it an unconscious desire to travel back to a past era when men were men and cameras were erratic and untrustworthy?

RGBStock – free stock photos for private and commercial use [Freeware]

The demand for images and illustrations for websites and printed matter is absolutely insatiable. Which is hardly surprising when you consider just how many websites there are, let alone the need from printed marketing material or even hobbyist publications. So it’s always great to be able to announce another service which offers free (and really free, not just royalty free) images for download.

AVMA Animal Hospital – cute game lets you try out as a virtual vet [Freeware]

Aww…who doesn’t love cute little animals? All soft and furry and ouch my finger (one of my favorite video clips of all time). Anyway, thanks to the kind offices of the American Veterinary Medical Association, you can now don the white gown, slip on the latex safety gloves and get down with helping nature’s little critters survive the dangerous world.

Marble – the earth on your desktop…and in your car [Freeware]

We live on a pretty cool planet, and there’s no better time waster than running through an atlas to see exactly where all the wonders of the world are located. Google Earth has pretty much dominated the digital atlas market for a few years, but now there’s a great alternative which uses open source maps and incorporates a ton of really useful features.

PirateBrowser – new browser bundle evades government censorship rules with a click [Freeware]

Everyone loves the Internet, even governments. It’s good for communications, trade and peaceful cooperation. But some of the more autocratic governments seem not to enjoy criticism, and that’s where a lot of the censorship issues arise. Even more ‘liberal’ governments such as those in the US and UK have made it clear that they’re keen to clamp down on content they deem unsuitable, even if those sites are perfectly respectable and legal.

Encrypted Communication – keep your words private from all those snooping eyes [Freeware]

Suddenly privacy is a big thing (again) and people are rushing around pointing fingers, hyperventilating and generally getting worked up. And quite rightly so. But at the end of the day things will only change if and when enough people bang the gong, so till then it’s up to us to carry on and take steps to protect our privacy as we feel is right.

AutoDesk 123D – free 3D printing software points the way to the future of things [Freeware]

Ever since word got out that 3D printing might actually save people money and pay for itself in a decent amount of time, there’s been renewed public interest in what is still something of a geek pastime. Unless you’re familiar with the world of makerbots, extrusion materials and the rest, you’re unlikely to consider adding a 3D printer to your shopping list alongside a new toaster, but this may soon start to change.

ReminderFox – it’s like having a digital butler installed on your computer [Freeware]

There’s always something else to do, to fix, to sort out. No matter how fast we run, tasks build up and events need remembering. If you’re like us you’ll already be using something like Google Calendar to help out, but good as it is, it doesn’t really give enough flexibility for coping with every eventuality.
