Max Tabs – a Firefox tabs cop which stops you wasting time [Freeware]

One common problem when working with the web are the many distractions that take away your focus. There’s always the possibility of wandering off to Facebook instead of writing that paper, or reading gossip instead of doing actual research. Hey, maybe you’re even procrastinating by reading this? If so, tsk…

AnnoPad for Chrome – annotate webpages like a pro [Freeware]

Keeping track of webpages when doing factual research can be a tricky task, and although you can use bookmarking and clipping apps, there’s none quite as straightforward as one called AnnoPad for Chrome. AnnoPad focuses on letting you bookmark webpages and adding notes along with them, making it a perfect tool for citing references from the web. While bookmarking tools give you lots of options to save and organize URLs, this Chrome extension makes it simpler by letting you take notes…

Tweet Context – right-click and tweet anything from the web

If you use Twitter to share bits of information or inspiring quotes from the web, a Firefox add-on has got you covered. Tweet Context lets you select any text from a web page and tweet it by using the context menu — that’s that box that comes up when you right-click on something. Here’s how it works: Install the add-on and it will ask that your restart Firefox. You may use the feature upon restarting the browser. Highlight a text…

Check My Links – scans for broken links in your website so you don’t have to [Freeware]

Running a website may look easy, but there’s a lot of work and re-work that goes on behind the scenes (tell me about it – Ed). When you write for the web, there are countless things you have to consider before hitting that “Publish” button, and sometimes it’s the small details that gets overlooked. In the case of broken links, it’s the readers who are left struggling in the dark.

Reply Now – stop procrastinating and answer your emails promptly for a change [Freeware]

Other than face-to-face conversation or a phone call, e-mail is probably one of the quickest ways to get in touch with someone. For some of us, it’s our main method of communication, and the faster it is, the better. But no matter how good our intentions, there’s always some reason why we just can’t get around to replying right now. But there’s hope.

BreakFree Cell Phone Addiction – fight your phone addiction and control your kids use too [Freeware]

There’s no easy way to tell someone they’re an addict, and especially if the addiction involves something as personal and useful as a smartphone. But we all know the victims of this vicious disease, heads down, monosyllabic conversations, avoiding eye contact for minutes at a time. And that’s just at breakfast.

Wiser – the perfect alternative to complex smartphone screens [Freeware]

OK, time for a confession. I’ve got 179 apps on my Android smartphone at the moment, which will do everything from send a postcard to measure the height of that tree over there. Ask me how many I use day to day? Probably three. Max five. Camera, dialer (duh), text, music and maps. And we’re guessing there’s a bunch of people like me who only use a fraction of the capabilities of their phone at any one time.

iFree Skype Recorder – excellent free tool for recording Skype calls with a click [Freeware]

If you’re a big user of Skype you’ll know that there are a number of addon tools you can use to make it work better, including some call recorders which let you capture conversations and store them in a variety of formats. But for the most part they’re either restricted (typically 15 min calls for free) or not very easy to use.

Word Lens – awesome translation app for iOS and Android is now free, and part of Google [Freeware]

Word just in says that Google has bought Word Lens, the ultra clever app for Apple and Android, which lets you point your camera at a foreign language sign and read an instant translation. We first covered it back in 2010, when it only offered a couple of languages, but it’s now grown to six, ranging from Russian to German, Italian and Portuguese.
