In an ideal world we’d all be able to afford the maximum unlimited data accounts with our shiny new smartphones, but it’s not an ideal world and we mostly have to settle for some sort of data cap each month. The real problem comes when we exceed the limits though, because that can get expensive, fast. Now there’s a way to track and avoid over-charges on your Android handset.

Status 4 Evar – restore the lost status bar in Firefox 29 in an instant [Freeware]

We have to say we’re enjoying the latest Firefox 29 version a lot. The browser definitely seems snappier all round, and the new layout is excellent for maximizing screen space, especially for those on laptop computers. But the one thing we’re not so enthusiastic about is the fact that the devs removed the bottom status bar for some reason. Naughty.

We’ve been playing with the very snazzy Elementary OS recently, and it’s actually very nice indeed. Designed as a replacement for the Windows or Apple operating systems on desktop and laptop computers, it’s based on the standard Ubuntu platform, with some nice bells and whistles added.

Firechat hits Android…mesh chat without Internet takes a big step forward [Freeware]

Firechat got some hot press last month when it debuted on Apple’s iPhone platform. In case you didn’t hear, it’s a free mesh communications app which means you can chat with nearby people without needing an Internet connection or mobile data service active. We’ve talked about this stuff before, notably with TinCan, but this new service offers a lot more functionality.

If you’re one of those folks who’ve been bitten by the video bug, you’ll know all about the joys and frustrations of getting your work done. Apart from having to learn all the ropes, it’s also tricky putting together professional looking productions without having the money to spend on the nice little extras. One extra which is particularly valuable is the use of B-roll, or stock footage, which can really add something to your video.
