Flight Stats is one awesome flying resource for anyone who travels, and even those who stay at home. Before you go you can check up on flight status, airport delays and weather and even get airport tips and performance ratings to give you a head start on the crowds. Once you’re en-route, your flight can be tracked in real time and those meeting you can plan their pickup down to the last second by getting alerts sent via SMS to their mobile phone. There’s also a v. cool flight gadget which you can embed on a startpage or Google desktop to keep track of a particular flight.
The whole service is free (you have to register for the advanced features though) and clearly sponsored by advertising, which can be a little intrusive at times, but hey, this is such a great information source that you have to forgive them totally.
There are more useful features on the site than we can mention in one post, user forums, travel directories, Google map traffic conditions on airport routes, travel deals, country information…the list goes on. All in all this is without question the number one resource for the air traveller on the web today. Period. And it’s fully international, too. If there’s one thing we would comment on – and it’s a small carp – it’s that the site could do with being a little less…er…formal. It’s clearly designed for the hardcore business traveller, but even so it comes over as just a bit too Web 1.0, when with a small amount of effort they could lighten up a bit and become more inclusive and friendly in a Web 2.0 kind of way. It’s a small and subtle point, but we thought it worth mentioning.
Nevertheless, if you travel, you have to bookmark this site. Now.
