Snappages is a gorgeous free online website creator and editor, which goes waaaay beyond your conventional services by offering some really cool editing features, so you can actually create sites that look….gasp….modern and hip.

The editor is clean and simple, and although the developer has deliberately restricted the amount of customisation you can do in order to keep things under control, there are enough variations to keep most people happy. I especially liked the ability to customise a theme separately to the content, which is very Web 2.0 and means you can change things around quickly and easily.

The ability to set permissions as to who can see what is also a neat touch, especially as the system comes with calendar and photo gallery templates built in. It’s just the thing for family sites where folks want to share and stay in touch.

The service is a little slow still (maybe a function of the server or the Flash interface or the fact that it’s early days?) but it’s still very usable. In fact the main problem I found in my quick run-through is the fact that the documentation is sparse, so for example there is no description of how to add video code to the video player feature or how to change the colour of the theme title text.

The finished sites are stored on a hosted server, which means that you’re tied to Snappages and won’t be able to move to your own server, which could be a definite negative when compared to services like Weebly, but it’s early days and hopefully that will be addressed later.

The free version offers 1 GB of space and 3 pages of content, if you need more you’ll have to upgrade to the Premium version which is a very reasonable $50.00 a year (and also gives you the ability to use your own domain name and other extras).

Overall this is a superb effort, especially as it’s apparently the work of one guy, Steve Testone, who definitely deserves a medal for putting this together. I can really see it taking off as more elements are added to the mix (apparently there’s a blogging component coming and clearly there will be more templates and design options as the service gains traction and users). Excellent service and one that I will definitely be recommending to friends and family.

SnapPages takes online website creation to a whole new level. Now anyone can create and manage a professional quality website with drag-and-drop simplicity. Not only is it fun and easy, with SnapPages you’ll end up with a great looking website that you can be proud of.
