EARTH Atlas – a global investment

Looking for an alternative to those pricey GPS systems? Then how about the EARTH atlas, a very limited edition 580 page silver bound tome measuring 36″ by 18″?

EARTH has been a 20 year labour of love for Sydney-sider Gordon Cheers who couldn’t get any of the big name publishers to take his idea of a luxury atlas seriously. Undeterred he started his own publishing company and gathered a team of 100 cartographers and 50 editors to compile the facts and maps to make EARTH a reality. The finished product weighs in at 35kg including a handbound leather case. Inside is just as spectacular with information on political and social landscapes as well as the more-or-less stable geological ones. It even boasts four, 6′ wide gatefold maps including one showing the Earth at night.

The grand unveiling begins in Sydney on Thursday the 9th of October and then onto Dubai and Frankfurt. If you’re interested you’d better hurry as it’s a very limited edition and will never be reprinted (except perhaps by Google). There are two versions on sale; 2000 copies of the silver collection at 2000 each or 1000 copies of the gold collection at an undisclosed price. [Via the Sydney Morning Herald]

Dubbed “the ultimate book about our world”, the luxurious, limited edition Earth is hand-bound in leather with gilded edges and silver-plated corners. The atlas and its case together weigh 30kg – more than the maximum many airlines set passengers for their baggage allowance. The 576 pages contain 154 maps and 800 photographs backed with detailed descriptions of every country’s geography, history and culture. Lying closed, the atlas takes up a third of a square metre with four gatefolds opening out to two square metres each.
