Whole Travel – sustainable travel

Whole Travel is a travel website with a little bit of a difference. Instead of just helping people find and book where they want to stay, Wholetravel helps you find somewhere you might not have known existed. You can search their database using things like “fly fishing” or “pristine beaches” and of course the normal things like which country you’d like to stay in or the number of stars of the hotel.

Wholetravel is also committed to sustainable travel and they ensure that their providers: “.. conserve natural resources, promote local economic development and educate travelers about the ecology, history and culture of their destination. Each destination must demonstrate what measures they are taking to be sustainable. You can also view their ratings on how they address things like minimising environmental impact, their contribution to the local economy, monitoring their effect on the local society and culture, and how they relate to their customers.

It’s easy to be cynical about these kinds of ventures, but Whole Travel seems to be on the level. Their ranking system shows you how sustainable a holiday destination is and customer feedback helps refine rankings or lets you know if the pictures don’t match the place. Most telling of all is that Whole Travel doesn’t sell anything and they don’t take commissions from the places they recommend, their income is derived wholly from the advertising placed on their pages. I assume it uses Google Ads or something similar so the ads are context based, but pseudo-random.

The website is in beta mode at the moment but they have a wide range of countries available and they’re sure to get more attention.

Whole Travel is a website for researching and booking directly with the world’s best green hotels and resorts. We want to change the way you search for travel. We’re not fans of being constrained by dates or specific locations when we’re looking for travel inspiration, and we wouldn’t dare do that to you. Try typing “fly fishing” or “warm water beach” into our search engine and see what you find. Of course, if you already know where you want to go, you can search for that too. Once you’ve found some interesting hotels, we send you directly to them for additional details and to book at their best available rate.
