MID M1 Mbook – prepare for the invasion of the mobile internet device

Midmbook

The new MID M1 mBook from Korea is described as a ‘Mobile Internet Device’, which means it’s a smaller laptop with a thumb keyboard and Windows. This type of product has been around for a while of course, with the OQO et al, but the new generation are arriving with cool tech like 3G HSDPA on-board and longer (e.g. 6 hours plus) battery life, which starts to make them useful on the move.

I’m still not convinced that the world needs a Windows/Intel computer at this level, anything with a good browser, 3G and a decent fast O/S would be just as valuable, if not more so, because there wouldn’t be a bloat problem to hamper speed and boot up times.

We’re about to witness an interesting tussle between the mobile phone makers and the computer companies to see who owns the mobile web arena. My money is on the phone guys, because they’re already there with devices, networks and things like all day battery life. Witness the Nokia 810. Here’s a quick hands-on preview of this MID product by the way.

1.33Ghz Intel processor, Genuine Linux or Windows XP, 4.8″ Touch Screen LCD 1024×600 display, 0.71lbs, Up to 32GB NAND Flash, Up to 6-hour battery, 512MB.
