Coda.FM – download full albums via BitTorrent

Coda.FM has me sorta confused. Ostensibly it’s a legitimate music album torrent search service which lets you find new music by putting a user friendly face on BitTorrent search. Find something you like? Click on the button to download the whole album via BitTorrent. Simple idea and laudable. But then you look at most of the front page material and the links mostly appear to be awfully copyrighted, which makes a mockery of the site’s disclaimer –

The torrent (metadata) files that we host do not contain data that might be copyrighted in any way. No copyrighted and/or illegal material is hosted by us. It is therefore not possible to hold the people behind Coda.fm responsible for the material that is being spread using this service.

Of course they’re just using the standard BitTorrent tracker links, so it’s a search engine just like Pirate Bay et al. But here’s the thing – the interface is absolutely gorgeous. The music is easy to find with a great search function, there are working – yes working – links to Amazon audio previews and a ‘Buy from Amazon’ button so you can purchase stuff you like. There’s also a bunch of really useful data on the artist, an album review and track list and recommended related music you might like.

And at the top of it all, a clear, easy to understand link to the Torrent and information on the file. If you had to design the best BitTorrent music site for newcomers to the genre, this would be it, no doubt. Which begs the question, is this a glimpse into the future of a music industry sanctioned music sharing Internet? With blanket levies covering DRM free, all you can eat, music distribution?

Right now the site has to be an RIAA target, but one day sites like this might actualy provide the kind of music search that people will use, and more importantly it could revitalise the interest of users who otherwise have given up on music discovery. Once the artists can be adequately compensated for downloads, everyone wins. Anyway for now, take a look and see the potential for yourself. Before someone shuts it down!
