PortableApps Suite – free portable programs for your USB stick or phone

Portableappsuite

The nice folk at PortableApps have come up with the PortableApps Suite, which is a pre-packaged set of useful freeware you can download and install onto your USB memory stick, phone, iPod or PDA. Just plug in to the nearest computer USB socket and start work – no install, no hassle.

It’s a great way to carry round an instantly accessible set of tools, and includes the Firefox browser, Thunderbird for email, Sunbird for Calendar/tasks, antivirus, messaging, games and office software like wordprocessors etc. It’s all open source of course. There’s a Light version for 256+ MB devices and Standard for 512+ MB. You never know when this will come in handy, right? Excellent.

PortableApps.com Suite is a complete collection of portable apps including a web browser, email client, office suite, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, antivirus, audio player, sudoku game, password manager, PDF reader, minesweeper clone, backup utility and integrated menu, all preconfigured to work portably. Just drop it on your portable device and you’re ready to go.

  • I've been using this for a while and by using it, I mean having it on a USB stick but not using it. I don't know if the problem is my USB stick or what, but Firefox takes about a minute to open and is very slowly for most things. The other apps I use every now and then but it's still a little slow.

  • I think speed and lifespan are the two factors which are not often discussed in relation to USB memory drives. And they are significant issues for day to day use of important data, so interesting to hear your feedback on that Dan.
