MixTape.me is a great new online music service which lets you create playlists, share them and learn about artists and music too. The service comes with a bunch of cool features, including an excellent liner notes facility which gives you artist info, lyrics and videos of a track you’re listening to. You create playlists by either using the inbuilt search engine to find what you want, or dragging and dropping from the playlists of others.
It’s quick, clean and you can get going very fast with a music selection you like. The real smarts of this application is, like Spotify, how fast you can get to listen to cool music. It’s slightly different to Spotify in that building playlists is more cumbersome than just clicking on an artist to hear all their music, but that doesn’t stop it being very cool indeed. Most people will start with the Popular playlists setting and I bet that most will find music faves in there somewhere to get them going.
Sharing playlists is also a cinch, just grab the URL or send it to an email address and you’re good to go. The only gripes I have with the UI is the lack of clear instructions as to how to get back to your playlist start point (hint: hit the little icon to the left of the artist name at top left) and how to add playlists to your favourites (rather than just single tracks). Hmm…maybe you can’t. Shame. Great music application, wonder how long it’ll take the music industry to try and shut it down or mess with it?
The internet makes it easy to share anything with anyone across the globe in a heartbeat; it’s about time music joined the party.
