Lowel Ego Light – simple desktop photography lightsource

Image

The Lowel Ego Light is a compact, easy-to-use lightsource for product photography and hobby studio work. Designed with the Ebayer or hobbyist in mind the Ego is quick to assemble, folds away easily and gives pretty darn good results. Check out Bakerella for some examples, which incidentally is where I found the Ego Light. The food bloggers love ’em!

So what does it do? Well you get the most flattering results in photography when your light source is really big. Think giant windows, flash umbrellas etc. The sun doesn’t really count as it’s so far away it’s actually quite small photo-wise. Anyhoo, if you’re doing up close detailed work then a big light source makes things look all nice, with soft shadows, smooth light gradations and all that good stuff.

The Ego simulates all this using compact fluorescent bulbs behind a curved translucent plastic sheet. The plastic diffuses the light and makes it all soft and yummy. Get in close with your fast zoom lens and photo magic can happen. These two photos below were taken with on-camera flash (left) and the Ego light (right). Chalk and cheese.

The Ego uses two 27W (100W bulb equivalent) 5500 K compact fluorescent tubes and it’s pretty much daylight colour. The tubes are rated at 5,000 to 10,000 hours and because they’re CF the whole thing shouldn’t get too hot. The Ego can sit on a table or attach to a tripod so you can put it where you need it to photograph your trinkets. $US137.50 rrp or $US89.90 at Amazon US.

Now anyone can create great looking professional results in their home. Lowel, the Academy Award winning world leader in location lighting for film & video, introduces a revolutionary tabletop fluorescent Digital Imaging Light, the elegant & easy to use Lowel Ego. Setup is a breeze, plug it in, place it on the table, & turn it on. The result is fast, simple, & beautiful light output that’s ideal for taking digital tabletop shots by collectors, arts & crafts hobbiests, sellers, archivists, and desktop publishers.
