Novatel MiFi 2200 Personal Hotspot – probably not the best way to WiFi your world

The Novatel MiFi 2200 Personal Hotspot is nice and all, but we can’t help thinking that it doesn’t really offer anything more exciting than your own 3G mobile phone loaded up with a copy of JoikuSpot. Let’s think about this for a moment – a carrier tethered lump of hardware at $399.99 or a €15.00 bit of software which currently works with Symbian or 3 network handsets (Windows Mobile is catered for by WM WifiRouter).

We’re guessing it’s probably cheaper to grab a used Symbian handset, install JoikuSpot and use it on just about any network in any country, than get something which is limited to a specific carrier. Hmm…

The Novatel MiFi 2200 Personal Hotspot combines a 3G EVDO modem with the concept of a portable router to provide an all-in-one portable hotspot. With an embedded EVDO Rev-A modem, the MiFi not only connects to Sprint’s 3G network but allows the user to share the connection via built-in WiFi!

  • Obviously you didn't read the NYT article:

    • Actually I did. David missed the point a tad I'm afraid.

  • Great "heads up". It would be nice if JoikuSpot supported the iPhone so that there would be no need for a Symbian device.

    • Agreed. Maybe they're working on it?

  • Purchased Verizon unit May 17, 2009 to add to my desktop and to link laptops and other peripherals via Wifi.

BEWARE: Unit DOES NOT work in dual mode. Use of USB connection DISSABLES Wifi functionality. They do not tell you this in the store or in the handbook.

Has limited range indoors – speed drops dramatically through walls and without direct line-of-sight. Do not use more than 30 ft.

Otherwise a great step in the right direction. Next generation should be better.

  • At this moment, I am looking something similar, wanted to get actual speed test results from you, guys, if any please.

concept of using 3G phone with WiFi tethering is failed for me: HTC G1 runs as router for about 2 hours (100% charge+AC plugged in) then dies. It is discharging battery faster than charging, while actively uses 3G+WiFi
