Orange Power Pump – let foot power charge your mobile phone

Orangepowerpump2

Mobile phone service Orange has launched its innovative Orange Power Pump which utilises air pressure from a conventional airbed foot pump to charge up your mobile phone. Of course it’s all a marketing gimmick for the upcoming Glastonbury Festival, but still it’s an interesting idea. The idea is you thump the pump, the pump drives the air, the air powers a charger which fills the phone with juice. Simple eh? Five minutes of talk time from the amount of pumping it would take to fill a pillow.

A compact camping accessory which fits all handsets, the Orange Power Pump measures 154mm by 129mm with a height of 47mm making it no bigger than a packet of Wet Wipes, is lightweight and easy to fit into your rucksack. Encased in sleek black housing, the turbine can generate enough energy to power 5 minutes of call time in the time it takes to inflate a pillow.

Uh, the wipes I use are packaged to about one inch square and one-16th or less inch thick: this pump looks a bit larger than two 100-count packages of them. Perhaps they mean "smaller than a bidet?"
