Propane is brilliant as a fuel as it burns much cleaner than petrol, and propane engines are simpler and lighter. The Lehr Trimmer runs on propane from an ordinary 16 oz gas bottle which you can pick up from any hardware store. Just screw it in and away you go, no mess, no choke, no priming. The engine is a 25cc four-stroke so it’s quieter than a petrol two-stroke but still has plenty of power.

So why use propane? Well, it has the equivalent of 110 octane rating to start and it doesn’t go off when you store it for long periods like petrol. It’s also safer as there are no refilling fumes and no chance you’ll slop fuel over a hot exhaust. Lehr reckon one cylinder will last you about 2 hours and the empty cylinder can be completely recycled. Refilling it would be a better option if you could.
