Opera Unite – super cool tech turns the web browser into a web server

Operaunite

I’ve been playing around with the new Opera Unite technology, and it is indeed very cool. Not so much because it’s new – the features and ideas behind it have been around in different forms for years – but because it brings these services together under one roof and makes them ultra simple for web newcomers and those who just want fire and forget simplicity in their lives.

The Opera people have basically turned their web browser into a system which can share files, photos, music and even run a chat room all from your local machine. No need to sign up for external services, or download additional programs. It’s P2P for the browser done with style. Setting up a new function, like a private chat room simply requires a click of a button to start, there’s no configuration, no setting up proxies or other tech bits to get through firewalls, it’s all point and go.

There’s too much coolness to go into detail here, suffice it to say you should try it yourself. It’s free although you’ll need to sign up for the Opera community in order to download and install. If you’ve been looking for a way to share the stuff on your computer with remote relatives or friends, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for. Excellent stuff!

Opera Unite allows you to easily share your data: photos, music, notes and other files. You can even run chat rooms and host entire Web sites with Opera Unite. It puts the power of a Web server in your browser, giving you greater privacy and flexibility than other online services… What if you use Opera at home, and a different Web browser at work? Opera Unite services can be accessed from any modern browser, including mobile browsers! At home, just select what you want to share, and you can view it later using your work Web browser without any problems.
