You’re fed up with Windows, it’s eaten your printer driver and your wifi hasn’t connected for weeks. What do you do? Well if you’re Korean company TmaxCore you sit down and over 4 years you build a new operating system.

They didn’t stray far from the path, their new OS is called Tmax Window and its makers claim it will support all current and future Microsoft Windows applications as well as running Linux apps. A very big call. They are also shipping an office suite called, strangely, Tmax Office and Tmax Scoutor, a web browser.

Inside Korea I’m sure the locals are pretty excited. The rest of the world seems to have ignored the product launch and the press release and it’s not hard to see why. The program isn’t quite ready yet but the screenshots are extraordinarily Windows-esque. I’ll hazard a guess that if they do try to sell it outside Korea, Microsoft will just litigate them into dust; confusion over the name, possible IP used in the UI, the list is probably endless. I’d love to be proven wrong but only time will tell. Oh and Google O/S, I must remember to mention the Google Chrome O/S somewhere … free, Google, etc, etc … The best review of the presentation and software seems to be here. Tmax Window is a PC operating system that was developed over the past four years as an alternative to MS Windows. It uses TmaxCore’s own technology to provide 100% support for existing and future MS Windows applications. The product launch for Tmax Window in November is expected to cause upheaval in the operating system market, which is currently dominated by Microsoft.
