The Urban Wheelchair – Awesome electric wheelchair concept provides mobility and elevation

Image

Words like trendy, efficient and empowering come to mind when looking at the Urban Wheelchair. Created by designer Ben Thorpe, this electric wheelchair concept has a lifting mechanism that brings users to a full upright position, putting them face-to-face for everyday tasks and conversations. Its hubless wheels have a tightly packed ball bearing system to reduce rolling resistance while two lithium batteries mounted on both sides of the seat generate power.

This wheelchair is full rechargable – it runs on one battery while charging the other – at the same time powering the 12 volt linear actuators that lift the seat. Lightweight and strong, the wheelchair’s seat is made using a technique called Selective Laser Sintering, which combined with a body scan like an MRI, means that users can have the seat moulded to their body shape. All in all, this wheelchair gives users comfort, style and dignity – with energy efficiency thrown in.

The Urban Wheelchair is a fully electric, lifting wheelchair that has been designed to address issues faced everyday by wheelchair users in an urban environment. The main design feature is the lifting mechanism, which allows the user to be effortlessly lifted into an upright position so that may improve their reach and also help instigate face-to-face conversation.
