Facebook fail – or how to enjoy some quality time with Barbara Streisand

Fbpurity

Oh dear, Facebook at it again…this time going after someone who has created a Greasemonkey script which modifies your browser to remove spam ads, quizzes, silly applications etc from your home page. This F**B**Purity (Facebook sued the dev into changing the name) script works on the browser alone, so it really has nothing to do with Facebook at all, but still their legal eagles have gone to town.

Of course, this being the Internets, the Streisand effect has kicked in, and so now lots more people know about this script than before. Own goal really. Oh and in case you’re not a Greasemonkey fan, here’s a seriously clever site which lets you turn Greasemonkey scripts into Firefox addons. Oh and here’s the addon itself (although you may need to keep updating it as Facebook change their code to fight off this ‘attack’).

If you are like me and are sick to death of seeing messages about quiz results and other silly facebook applications, then you have come to the right place! I wrote a greasemonkey script that removes all the annoying quiz messages and other silly application spam from your facebook homepage. Leaving behind just the standard Facebook apps such as status updates, wall posts, links, notes, photos, etc.
