Coblis – The Colour Blindness Simulator

If you’re a web designer or product designer you probably don’t think too much about designing for people with colour blindness. There are quite a few variations so where would you start? Well, maybe Coblis can help. It’s a colour-blindness simulator that lets you visualise how people with different forms of colour blindness see the world. The page lets you upload different images to test or you can use the default one. Definitely will come in handy if you’re trying to make your website or product highly accessible, I’m looking at you inkjet printer makers.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to get it to work with uploaded images in Firefox, with or without IE Tab, your mileage may vary though so have a squiz.

As it is not not so easy to describe color blindness it comes in handy, that some smart people developed manipulation-algorithms to fake any form of color vision deficiency. The algorithms transform any picture into the same picture as seen by red-, green-, blue- or completely colorblind people.

  • Color Blindness should always be on a designer's mind.

An easier way to test your design is to simply desaturate it until it appears in only black and white. Then, you'll be able to see the values of your color (the difference between light green and dark green, for example) and make adjustment accordingly
