BarTab – free Firefox addon controls your tab memory consumption

Bartab

BarTab is a superb tool for all you Firefox tab junkies out there. It’s a free add-on which manages the loading of your tabs so you consume minimal memory until you need to access a tab. You can also set it so Firefox will boot up faster by managing startup tab loading.

I’ve got it installed and it’s great. I’ve set it up to load all my tabs first thing, but then unload the ones I don’t access very often after 30 minutes. It’s keeping my Firefox memory footprint down to around 25% of what it was, which gives a massive performance boost all round.

An essential addon if you’re serious about your browsing, searching and researching.

So you keep open tabs like libraries keep books… Aren’t you afraid Firefox will consume all your memory? Don’t you fear browser restarts because it takes so long to reload all your tabs? Well, you shouldn’t! Because now you can put all the tabs you don’t need on your bar tab, and only pay for the load when you actually want to visit them. BarTab can intercept when tabs are loaded in the background or restored after a browser restart and will only load the content when the tab is actually visited. It also allows you to free memory by unloading already loaded tabs, either manually or automatically.
